STIRLING DISH

ABSTRACT

The aim of the project is to design and build a solar powered portable
Stirling engine which could lead to more efficient designs and a better
understanding of environmentally friendly power sources.

A Stirling engine works on the principle that when a gas is heated it

will expand and when cooled it will contract. When the gas is contained in a
piston cylinder, changes in thermal energy will cause a pressure
increase/decrease in the cylinder that will generate work by moving the
piston. The heat that required by the cylinder for the compression and
expansion processes is given by the concentrated paraboloid solar dish.
There is no internal combustion,no explosions and so the Stirling Engine is
very quiet. The system operates under solar power,a non renewable resource
as compared to the convetional engines that uses external power supply.
The main advantage for the Stirling Engine is that it is very quiet and that it
can be carbon neutral if the external sources are emission free.
