WEEK 2 (June 19-24, 2017)

During our first week, we were only introduced to Engr. Boyet Tiongson and operating
officer Ms. MJ Tiongsion. By the second week, we got to know the owner of MJ Tiongson
Construction, Engr. Mark Jerome Tiongson. He was unavailable last week since he attended the
PICE Convention.

We first went to have a lunch with him and he shared to us some valuable information. First,
he inspired us that age and poverty cannot hinder anyone from achieving their dream. Engr.
Tiongson played minor roles on television back then. He studied engineering at the age of 28 while
being a working student. Then, he elaborated about the 6 Dos that we previously learned.
According to him, the concerns that well encounter in construction is tied to this. Lastly, he told us
that engineers should be versatile. While we have our engineer license, we should also have our
drivers license, or that we should also possess another skill or title such as master plumber. This
is important for our resumes since it adds weight to us which gives us an edge.

After lunch, we visited the different construction sites. We went to Tupi where there are two
separate on-going construction with both having bridges. We then went to Brgy. Sinawal where
the road going to city land fill is under construction.

The next day, we went to Brgy. West for lay-outing. The company acquired a new project
from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The lay-outing included survey works
under the supervision of the DPWH. While in there, we got excited about the survey equipment
brought that they brought. We were then told by Engr. Tiongson that we shouldnt do that. This is
where I learned about knowing my position. The company were at is the contractor while DPWH
administered the survey works, thus we have no responsibility in doing so. According to him, there
are specific people assigned for specific works and that they are only employed for that specific
reason.

Our next task was to know the different construction method. Since it will take about two
days before the start of construction in Brgy. West, we were assigned to the on-going drainage
system construction along Ventilacion St., Brgy. Lagao for the meantime.

There we learned from the project engineer the construction method for a drainage system.
For him, the first one is the removal of obstructions, excavation, then masonry works. For the week,
we observed different works in construction: excavation, clearing obstructions using jackhammer,
preparing cement mixture using bag mixer, large-scale water pumping, culvert placing and
masonry works including making the manhole and making the manhole planks. The team also
encountered problem during the excavation. Since the back hoe is huge, it can reach the electrical
wirings and damage some lines. They then contacted the SOCOTECO.

For the last day of our week 2, we started the project in Barangay West. The project started
by putting up bollards and the project billboard. Drilling was next followed by excavation.
