Contrary to its name, the Bacchus Marsh
Flower and Garden Show is about much
more than just plants.
In its fourth year, the event, formerly known
as the Bacchus Marsh Horticulture Show, will
see a wide range of attractions including cake
decorating and photography competitions,

vortex fountains, and a childrens art table.

We know theres a lot of really good
photographers in town, and theres also a lot
of great cake decorators, so weve decided to
give the show another string, she said.
We lost the Agriculture Show way back in
the year 2000 and there were a lot of different
competitions that people could enter into
back then, so we thought we would expand
this year to give people an extra thing to
participate in.
The Flower and Garden Show is held
annually at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall
and features seven show sections: roses, cut
flowers, floral art, Australian natives, junior
section, pot plants, and garden produce.
The cake decorating competition will
include a single tier 10-inch cake or six
cupcakes decorated in a garden theme, and
photography submissions will comprise of
un-photo-shopped photographs of trees,
flowers or gardens.
The show will be held on October 28 and
29, with flower entries to be brought to the
Public Hall between 7:30am and 9:30am on
the first day.
Scarecrow and show mascot, Marigold will
be joined by her three friends at the show
and will shortly be seen around Bacchus
Marsh in the lead up to the event.
Ms Taylor said the Flower and Garden Show
was founded in order to raise money for the
promotion of an Aquatic Centre in Bacchus
Marsh.
While our mandate is to support local
organisations and businesses, we also want
people to know that we are still working
hard to get an aquatic centre to replace the
very, very old pool that is closed for nine-
months of the year.
We need the local community behind us as
a bit of a pressure group, as we would really
love to see a facility that will be utilised by
every age group from six months right up
to 90-plus.

following the 2015 bushfire
that destroyed 12 homes and
burnt more than 4600 hec-
tares of land.
The Scotsburn Recovery

Committee was presented
the Victorian Resilient Aus-
tralia Community Award at
a ceremony held on Tuesday
(September 26).
The award was recognition
of the committees hard work
that followed the 21-months
after the devastating blaze.
Held annually by Emergen-
cy Management Victoria, the
awards recognise initiatives
that make Victorian com-
munities safer, more resil-
ient and better prepared for
disasters.
Emergency Management

a great way to remind and

dents as a positive outcome.
The decision followed an
11-signature petition which
requested traffic calming in
the form of road changes at
the intersection of OLeary

general support for the exit

the intersection, but added
that additional signage
should also be considered to
minimise the likelihood of

street sign, and the provi-
sion of a sign at the Southern

modifying the intersection
of Farrow Place and OLeary
Way by restricting traf-
fic movements to left hand

stalled prohibiting entry to
Farrow Place from OLeary
Way; the Works will be
developer-funded from the
incomplete works bond.

located, and a Local Traffic

In discussions with the
developer, it is envisaged
that they would be willing
to complete these works as
a priority given Council is

A new borrowing policy is in place for Moorabool Shire

Council.
As part of Councils 2016/17 successful rate cap variation,
the Essential Services Commission noted the lack of a formal
borrowing/debt management policy and recommended
that Moorabool Shire develop a Borrowing Policy.
The policy in large part reflects Moorabool Shires current
borrowing practices, and aims to ensure compliance with
relevant standards, guidelines and best practice.
Councillors voted at the September 6 council meeting,
to adopt the policy, which will be available on councils
website.

Keep the buzz in bees

A little secret army is buzzing around
Ballan but its under attack, unknowingly,
from local farmers and backyard gardeners.
From hives in the centre of town to the
outskirts, Ballan has a blooming bee
population, a fact that often surprises
residents who havent noticed the bees busily
performing their vital work.
But flying under the radar is causing a bit of
a problem for the Ballan Beekeepers Group
as member Jane Dennithorne told the
Moorabool News.
Most people dont realise that there are a
lot of bees kept in and around Ballan not
just private ones but theres commercial ones
too, the farmers pay to have the hives moved
here so that the bees will pollenate the crops,
and honey is just a sideline for them, she
explained.
But spraying, herbicides and insecticides
and fungicides, are so harmful for them.
Ms Dennithorne is one of 20 members of
the Ballan Beekeepers group, which meets
regularly, and is asking for local farmers and
also backyard gardeners to notify the group
when they intend to do any spraying.
Because people often dont know that there
is a hive near them, even if they are in the
centre of town, its important to let us know
when they are using any sprays so that we
can protect the bees.
Bees fly five to six kilometres from home,
and because you can only spray in good
weather thats also the time that the bees
are out and about. So if we know youre
spraying, we can block the hives and keep
the bees inside so theyre not going to get hit
directly with insecticides.
Another problem is wasps.
We need to get on top of the wasp problem
that has been growing in Ballan over the past
few years a lot of people kill bees thinking
they are wasps, so its good to make sure you
can identify a wasp and kill it.
Wasps kill bees. Theres nothing worse
than having a group of wasps outside a hive,
attacking every single bee as it comes in,
getting it on the ground and stinging it to
death, then eating it. Its awful.
Along with notifying of spraying and
keeping wasps under control, locals can
also plant more diverse flowering plants to
support the local bee population.
Tea tree is best, they are what is used to
produce manuka honey, and they are really
good for bees.
The decimation of bees worldwide has
featured in the news as they are considered
to be responsible for one in every three
mouthfuls of food humans consume and
without bees, having to hand-pollenate
manually is quite a task.
People spend days up on ladders with little
paint brushes, moving pollen from one plant
to another.
In the meantime, notifying the local
beekeepers in advance of any kind of
spraying is the best option.
We dont want to antagonise anybody, we
know that some people have to use sprays
- but even if youre just using sprays in the
home garden please let us know because
there are bees throughout the Ballan
community.

In a flurry of reporting-
season paperwork, council
has approved financial and
performance statements to
be sent to the Auditor-Gen-
eral, and a checklist has been
completed as well.
All three items were heard
at the Wednesday Septem-
ber 6 council meeting.
The financial statements
show that council had an
income increase of nearly

thanks to a recently revised
brochure.

Group, the booklet is de-
signed to arm local people
with knowledge about

weeds and how to kill them.

was available some time ago,
but now was the time to act.
We wanted to wait until
the weather improved a bit
before distributing the re-
vised edition, she said.
The feeling was that no
one would be doing too
much outdoors until spring
time, and the weeds need to
be hit when they are starting
The local Landcare Group
have identified weeds that
are the most damaging to the
local environment and have
described how to kill them
and the best time of year to
undertake eradication.
Weeds identified include
holly, gorse, broom, Spanish
heath, blackberry, Himala-
yan honeysuckle, blue peri-
winkle and galena.
The booklet is being distrib-
uted from the Blackwood

ever, the increase does also
take into account the early
payment of the state govern-

A two-time Melbourne Cup
winning trainer will grace the
streets of Ballan as part of the 2017
Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour.
Mick Robbins, a former coal
miner from Broken Hill, had held
his trainers license for just three
months when he experienced his
first Melbourne Cup win with Rain
Lover in 1968.
The champion thoroughbred took
out the following year too, making
him the first horse since the famous
Archer to achieve back-to-back
Melbourne Cup victories.
Today, Robbins remains active
within the racing industry and
will visit Ballan as part of the 15th
annual Emirates Melbourne Cup
Tour on Wednesday October 11.
Ballan was selected as one of
31 tour destinations throughout
Australasia following an
application by the Ballan Jockey
Club.
The $200,000 Emirates Melbourne
Cup will visit each destination
before returning to Flemington on
the first Tuesday in November.
Ballan boasts four Melbourne Cup
winning horses with connections
to the area; including one of the
greatest Melbourne Cup winners,
Carbine; and Mentor, who was
bred at Ballark, the home of
Donald Wallace.
Victorian Racing Club (VRC)
Chairman, Amanda Elliott said she
is thrilled to have Robbins join the
tours milestone year.
The Emirates Melbourne Cup is
the race on the calendar and for 14
years the iconic trophy has toured
our nation, bringing together
communities to experience the
magic and rich history of the
Melbourne Cup, she said.
In this its milestone 15th year,
what better way to celebrate this
iconic piece of Australias cultural
heritage than to have heroes of the
Melbourne Cup like Mick on the
Tour in Ballan.

undo their DIY handiwork,
with council ordering that
illegal drains and driveways
be removed.
It all started when council
officers received a number
of complaints in relation to
works being undertaken
by property owners within
Councils road reserve and

cerns about repeated flood-
ing issues within neighbour-

While flooding issues be-
tween neighbouring prop-
ried out by some residents
has now impeded Councils
ability to carry out the main-
tenance work and may also
pose a public liability risk to
Council.
Several inspections have
been conducted during wet
weather to identify specific
problems with the drain-
age network at Hopetoun
Park. This includes the fill-
ing of table drains and the
installation of pits and pipes
without Council approval,
which have created localised
pooling of water and conse-
quently creating a hazard.
There is also a range of other

appearances and a match
played alongside his 17-year-
old son are just some of the
remarkable milestones ex-
perienced by Darleys Travis
Stephenson.
The dedicated Devil cele-
brated 400 games of football
in this years Ballarat Foot-
ball League finals series. The
impressive feat came just
weeks after he played in the
reserves alongside his eldest
son Jye.
Stephenson, 43, started
his junior football career at
Bacchus Marsh and became
a Devil in 1995, aged 20.
His inaugural season saw
him take home his maiden
senior premiership, which
included a best on ground
performance.
1995 was definitely a big
year for me, he said.
It was actually the first
time in my whole football
career that I had made any
finals, so to walk away with
a premiership medal was
pretty special.
The next 18-years of Ste-
phensons senior career in-
cluded a second grand final
Darley Football Club Presi-
dent, Ray Newton said Ste-
phensons 400 games was
a token of his dedication to
both the game and the club.
If you just look at our Fa-
cebook post congratulating
him on the 400 games, you
will see all these comments
coming from not only Dar-
ley members and players,
but also people from across
town at Bacchus Marsh too,
saying what a terrific fella
he is, he said.
400 games are rare, but its
not surprising, [Stephenson]
is a superb athlete. He is the
fairest footballer Ive ever
seen and his dedication to
his fitness and his own body
is evident. He is a great ex-
ample to not only his kids,
but to all the other juniors
too.
Stephenson said while play-
ing 400 games of football
had a lot to do with his love
for the sport, it also came
down to being a part of a
brilliant club.
I remember I was pretty
nervous when I first arrived
at Darley, but Clark Whelan
walked up to me, shook my
hand and said Welcome to
the Devils. Thats something
that I really remember from
back then.
Darley is a really family-
driven club and from the
very beginning my family
and I were welcomed with
open arms.
Stephensons parents, his
wife Trish and their sons Jye
and Bryce have been heavily
involved with the club for
many years.
Its a bit of a family affair
down there, he said.

VicRoads is inviting the Bacchus Marsh
community to view the plans for upcoming
improvements at the Gisborne Road
interchange.
A community information session will be
held this Thursday 5 October at the Darley
Neighbourhood House where residents
and businesses can find out more about
the project and share their valuable local
knowledge.
VicRoads Project Director Nigel Powers
highlighted the benefits of the project for
drivers accessing the Western Freeway.
We will be building additional traffic lanes
and new traffic lights at the Gisborne Road
and Holts Lane intersection.
There will also be a new slip lane to connect
traffic to the Melbourne-bound on ramp of
the Western Freeway, Mr Powers said.
VicRoads also plan to close access from the
Gisborne Road service road to Holts Lane.
We acknowledge this will inconvenience
some but overall this will greatly improve
traffic flow and safety said Mr Powers.
Work has started on the detailed design
with construction expected to run from this
summer through to June 2018.
VicRoads are also progressing with the
Halletts Way Interchange Project and will
have team members on hand to provide
updates and answer questions.
Mr Powers says feedback is really important
and encouraged those that cannot make it on
the day to visit their website, to share your
thoughts.
Community members are welcome to drop
in at any time between 3:00pm and 7:00pm to
view the plans and provide their insights and
suggestions at the Darley Neighbourhood
House.
