MTTFd

Determination of MTTFd values according to ISO 13849-1:2006

The reliability coefficients MTTFd (mean time to dangerous failure) of components are used to calculate the
probability of a potentially dangerous failure per hour (PFHd) of a machine or system and to keep this to an
acceptable level.
The ISO 13849-1:2006 standard stipulates an MTTFd value of 150 years for hydraulic components, assuming
that fundamental and proven safety principles are applied.
Requirements for hydraulic valves employed in safetyrelated parts of control systems include:
Automatic reset to basic settings in the event of a power failure
Reliable maintenance of the basic settings
Hydraulic components which are not compliant with the relevant safety principles are not suitable for
application in safety-related parts of control systems. Bosch Rexroth has carefully tested its products with
respect to all relevant fundamental and proven safety principles in accordance with a method recognized
by the Institute for Occupational Safety of the German Statutory Accident Insurance Association (IFA).

Compliance with safety principles, application notes

The Compact Hydraulic components of Rexroth are generally suitable for use in safety-related parts of a
control system according to ISO 13849-1:2006.
These products meet, where applicable, the requirements of ISO 13849-1:2006 concerning.
fundamental safety principles
proven safety principles
Use the following parameters for the product for evaluating and configuring the reliability of the control
systems:
MTTFd = 150 years
In control blocks the MTTFd value refers to a slide valve axis.
TM = 20 years (maximum duration of use according to ISO 138491:2006)
If required, B10d values can be determined for safety-related parts of a control system.
When using these, please ensure compliance with the following application notes!

Application notes

The further fundamental and proven safety principles according ISO 13849-1:2006 which are needed
for implementing and operating the products are also to be observed.
The system specifications stipulated in the data sheet and technical data (RE 18350-50) for
operation and handling of the products must be observed.
Only use the hydraulic fluids specified in the data sheets and maintain the purity of the
hydraulic fluid over the entire period of use.
Seizures may occur in the switching/slide valves after a prolonged period of nonuse. Our advice
is therefore to regularly switch or actuate the system at reasonable intervals.
If the product is used for higher-category safety-related structures (categories 2 to 4) according
ISO 13849-1:2006, Section 6, take into account the requirements stipulated herein (e.g. CCF,
DC, PLr, software, system errors).
The maximum duration of use according to ISO 13849-1:2006 is 20 years, assuming that the
purity of the hydraulic fluid is maintained according to ISO 4406:1999 TM. In the interests of
preventive maintenance, it is recommended that components be replaced before the maximum
period of use expires.
Valves for mobile applications are designed for a maximum number of operating cycles,
normally identified in 1 Mio cycles, unless differently indicated. If the maximum number of
operating cycles is exceeded within the period of use, correspondingly shorter replacement
intervals must be specified.

Conversion of B10d in MTTFd according to ISO 13849-1:2006:

B10d
MTTFd=
0.1 * nop

B10d= average number of cycles in which up to 10% of the components have dangerously failed.
nop= average number of operations per year.

System reliability / life cycles costs (TCO)

Because the MTTFd values only take account of the safetyrelated parts of a component, these
oefficients are not suitable for evaluating the reliability of a system or the life cycle costs (TCO = Total
Cost of Ownership). If necessary, please consult your contact person at Bosch Rexroth.

Use of Compact hydraulic components in safety functions

The safety coefficient MTTFd is limited to the safety-related parts of the valve as products that have no
control function cannot be assigned to functional safety.

The control valve may be used as a component part of the safety function safe volume flow
shutoff. The safety function is shown in its initial position. This ensures, among other things, an
adequate degree of overlap. Adequate overlap is a proven safety principle. Even in the event of a
loss of power, the valve will return automatically to its initial position.

When available the corresponding MTTFd value is specified in the datasheet.

The valve alone does not fulfill a complete, self-contained safety function. In order to ensure the
required safety function in the equipment, further measures have to be taken by the equipment or
machine manufacturer (e.g. use of a suitable control unit or sensor).

The machine manufacturer bears the responsibility for the safety of the machine, including the correct
design and evaluation of the control systems employed in the safety functions. He is thus responsible
for ensuring compliance with normative and statutory requirements in the countries concerned.
