Introduction
Throughout 2016, as a contractor of the State Innovation
Model, Asian Media Access conducted community surveys
with four diverse community groups to gather their cultural
perspectives on the healthcare system in Minnesota. We
took a nontraditional approach to data collection by using
video and audio interviews, photo booth with whiteboard
statements, and a web-based postcard making platform to
create images relating to the questions.

We highlighted the results in our montlhy newsletter and

present them here for you.

Story Circles
Our Story Circle Articles are composed of statements
captured during video and audio interviews with white paper
segments to support. We also created fact sheets which can
be used by the health care community to provide care which
is sensitive to the cultures they are serving. These Story
Circle Articles provide insight into the views and cultural
practices of Hmong, Hispanic, Somali, and Native American
communities in Minneapolis.

Storybird
Storybird is a web-based platform for creating stories and
postcards. They have an image library that can be searched
by sentiment. We asked participants the following question,
what do you think of the healthcare system in Minnesota?,
then asked them for their most basic emotional response
to this question which was the term we then used for the
image search. Once they found the most appropriate image
for their response, they select it and are presented with a
random selection of words to choose from. They were then
prompted to choose the words that best fit their response
and we saved the images to share in our newsletters and
other outreach activities.
