Question 4
Read the text below.
There are many steps you can take to save the environment. Firstly, if you have a garden, you

can do a compost to encourage better plant growth. You can make compost with kitchen scraps.

Secondly, plant trees in your garden as they absorb carbon dioxide and provide shade. It is a good

idea to plant native plants as they need less watering.

Thirdly, turn off electrical appliances when not in use. This is due to the fact that up to 30

percent of power consumption is used while appliances are turned on. You should also use your

windows to control the temperature. When the weather is hot, open your windows. The breeze from

outside will keep you cool and remove stale air in the house.

Furthermore, good air circulation throughout your home saves the cost of running an air-

conditioner. Also remember to turn off the lights when they are not in use. You are not only

throwing money away by leaving them on.

Next, try to recycle as much as possible. Have four separate waste baskets for paper, glass,

metal and organic waste. Make sure the contents end up in the correct recycling bins. Avoid using

disposable products, such as plates, cups, napkins and cutlery. Use reusable towels and

dishwashing clothes in place of paper towels and disposable dish sponges.

If you have a printer at home, use recycled paper for your printer. When you are using new

pieces of paper, print on both sides. You can also give scrap paper to your siblings or use it as a

7
notepad for phone messages. Make sure you turn off the computer every day. This will help you save

energy consumption. Turning off the computer at night also helps reduce any risks of overheating.
