LESSON PLAN OUTLINE

JMU Elementary Education Program

TITLE/TYPE OF LESSON
Review of World Maps
CONTEXT OF LESSON
All of last week students learned about the world map and how to locate the 7 continents,
5 oceans, and prime meridian. This week is a review week of all of the map skills they
have learned over the last couple of weeks (virginia, US, and world). Today is a review
of just the world maps.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand what are the broad Know what are the facts, rules, Do what are the specific thinking

ASSESSING LEARNING
Students learning will be assessed through observation during the world map game,
through checking each others work, and through an end of lesson social studies ticket
question.

RELATED VIRGINIA STANDARDS OF LEARNING (and NATIONAL STANDARDS if

required)
Social Studies:
2.5 The student will develop map skills by a) locating the equator, the seven
continents, and the five oceans on maps and globes
2.6 The student will demonstrate map skills by constructing simple maps, using
title, map legend, and compass rose.

c. Optional: laminated maps so that students can write on them with dry erase
markers and they are reusable
*Dice
*Dry erase markers

PROCEDURE
i. Preparation of the learning environment (if required)
1. Have copies of maps made (and laminated if you want them for reuse)
2. Have youtube videos up on the computer

ii. Engage -Introduction of the lesson

1. How many continents are there?
a. Who can tell me what each one is?
2. How many oceans are there?
a. Who can tell me what each one is?

iii. Implementation of the lesson

1. Watch two youtube videos
a. Have summary/review after each video
2. Project one of the maps on the smartboard, explain the game, and give an
example of how to play
a. Roll the die and write whatever continent or ocean corresponds
to that number on the map
b. Tell students they are allowed to check each others work but not
to give answers
3. Pass out maps, dice, and markers to each table
a. Tell students not to touch anything anything everyone has their
pieces
b. Go over how to play one more time and give one more example
4. Play game: Map Drive
a. This game is based on a British game - Beetle Drive. Each player
needs a copy of a simple world map. Divide the class into groups
of 4-6. Each group needs a dice. Players take turns rolling the
dice. Each number rolled is equated with part of the map
i. South America, North America
ii. Europe, Asia
iii. Africa, Antarctica, Australia
iv. Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean
v. Arctic Ocean, Southern Ocean
vi. Indian Ocean
b. So, if a player rolls a 2, he can fill in the word Europe or Asia in
the correct place on the map. Play passes to the next person. If
they roll a 3, they can fill in Africa, Antarctica or Australia on
their map. If they roll a number and they have already filled in
all continents / oceans associated with that number, they miss a
turn. Play continues until someone in the class has filled in all 7
continents and 5 oceans and they shout MAP!
5. Walk around as students play and assist when necessary
a. When someone fills up their map and wins, they get a starburst
iv. Closure

2:00PM - 10/4/2017

1. Have students do a social studies ticket

v. Clean-up (if required)
1. Collect assessments
2. Collect maps, dice, and markers

DIFFERENTIATION
The majority of the differentiation is included in the game. Teams are set up to
accommodate students with differing needs, and because I will be assisting and other
students at the table are helping to check answers, all students should be able to
successfully play the game. There is also not as much differentiation throughout the
lesson because this is a review day and students have already had a week to prepare in
their understanding of this material.

WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT
IT?
As always, time could be the biggest problem. I am always unsure of how well students
will perform in the games or activities I prepare because they are constantly surprising
me and doing better than I expect. If we tend to go longer or shorter with the lesson, we
will either cut back on the game or play the game again. Students may not know where
all of the continents/oceans are, and if this becomes a classwide problem that I or the
other members of the team cannot solve easily, then we will play the game as a whole
class with me rolling a die and the students writing where that piece of their map is. That
we can go over it together if many students are struggling and have a winner out of the
whole class.
