A Campaign against KFC Corporation Case Study

1. Each side has valid points when they defend their reasoning for what they

are doing. I do think that PETA brings to light some issues of necessary

change that KFC needs to make their chicken suppliers follow. Killing the

chickens more humanely and feeding them more natural food are two things

that I think that KFC can easily do. However, I would probably have to side

with Kentucky Fried Chicken with this controversy. Most of PETAs claims

are simply unnecessary and unrelated to the ethical treatment of chicken.

Yes, some of the circumstances chickens are put in are not comfortable, but

KFC needs to grow as many chickens as they can in the fastest amount of

time possible. While PETA claims that KFCs practices are unnatural, whos to

say that what they do is not simply an advanced form of hunting?

2. PETAs basic criticisms are that the chickens are experiencing cruelty

because of inhumane deaths and the suppression of the chickens natural

behavior. They say that chickens are being killed cruelly, being breed for

uncomfortable lives, kept in spaces that are too small, and being handled

carelessly. This is similar to some criticisms of business such as the need for

more ethical behavior and better oversight.

3. KFC initially responded to the criticisms by creating Animal Welfare Advisory

Council and began unannounced inspections at its growers and

slaughterhouses. Once, PETA said that these changes were still

unsatisfactory, KFC held their ground. Their reasoning for this was that
selling chicken met a positive demand of customers, most of PETAs claims

were false, they comply and go beyond all laws and regulations set for

growing chickens, and that they are not the ones that are treating the

chickens unethically, the suppliers were.

4. The source of power in PETAs campaign is theater. The group uses the

controversial tactics to make people look at them and realize what they are

doing. Even if people think they are crazy, their message is still getting

across. Most of their methods are acceptable, however personal attacks

should be considered inappropriate.

5. Peta is can protest all they want. They do have some valid points, but on the

whole, most of their tactics seem a bit over the top.

6. Animals have a right of physical protection. Cruel handling of animals should

be considered unacceptable. KFC can do a little more to protect and treat

their animals with care.
