In the story, the turtle

displayed much impressive sagacity and cunning over the monkey, ultimately punishing those monkeys
with it. The lesson is that the weak but cunning can be a lot stronger than the strong but stupid. One
shouldn't be daunted by the apparent strength of a stronger foe, and instead, use one's intellect.

The Monkey and the Turtle

Jose Rizal was recognized as the most notable writer and poet during his time and the entire Philippine
history. He translated some original German folk tales into Tagalog or Filipino for his beloved nephews
and nieces in the Philippines while he was in Europe. Hence, he re-popularized and illustrated the fable
The Monkey and the Turtle.

In 1889, Rizal wrote a studied article for Trubners Record named Two Eastern Fables and because his
readers were ethnologists, he put side by side the Philippine folktale "Ang Buhay ni Pagong at ni
Matsing with a comparable Japanese tale on the subject of a monkey and a crab. This folk tale is
seldom read today although the text is drawn from Rizals own English translation.

In Paris, France, four years earlier, sometime in December of 1885, Rizal drew an illustrated account of
the precise story in the scrapbook of Paz Pardo de Tavera, who would be the wife of fellow reformist
and Philippine national hero, Juan Luna but regrettably the original manuscript was not archived. The
text handed down to readers today is a reproduction in the 1913 biography of Jose Rizal by Austin Craig.

Symbolism
Monkey- The Monkey in the story symbolizes the cunning, powerful, influential and rich people of
society during the Spaniard era. The half Spanish half Filipino people also known as Peninsulares or
Insulares were those people who mocked the weak and the poor Filipinos, having them as slaves and
brutally employed but unpaid workers. The monkey also represents the opportunist, self-serving people
of the society, ready to get more for them and be always on the top.

Turtle - The Turtle in the story reflects the hospitality and genuine trust of the Filipinos. The turtle
enables equality to be practiced by cutting the banana tree on the center, having the less-looking.
Hence, being left with the less productive looking half of the tree, the turtle did her best to make the
most out of it by patience and perseverance. Having no choice and out of humility, the turtle in the story
accepted the offer of the greedy monkey to gather the fruit from the tree even if the fooled her from
the past. With unfair results, the turtle showed vengeance as result of pain and disappointments.
Nevertheless, she learned her lesson and never trusted the monkey and deceived it for survival.

Banana tree -The banana tree symbolizes the wealth of the any country, any community or of any tribe.
It also reflects that hard work shall give back fruits or results, results that can be easily stolen.

Fruit - As the banana tree grew, it brought happiness to the monkey as it bared a banana that signifies
the result of hard labor and dedication.

Mortar- The mortar signifies the punishment or sentence the criminal shall suffer. It also gives reflection
to injustice.
Analysis
In [this] version there is a great deal of morality: it is the eternal fight between the weak and the
powerful.

The classic Filipino folk tale specifically a fable is all about the cunning and greed that escalates into a
battle of wits and, ultimately, a fight for survival that the submissively weak and poor and shall die while
the wise and powerful yet abusing shall survive.

What is left after domestic consumption is brought to the market to be sold. The last two commodities
are produced as barter items, for which they get the food articles, utensils, and tools they need. The
domestic animals include a few chickens, dogs, cats, and occasional fish .

cooperation enable them to share the sweet bounty, or will greed and selfishness prevail? Adapted from
a Filipino folk tale.

The story of these two opponents, the monkey and the turtle, is widespread in the Philippines. In the
introduction to a collection of Bagobo tales which includes a version of this fable, Laura Watson
Benedict says (JAFL 26 [1913] : 14), The story of The Monkey and the Turtle is clearly modified from a
Spanish source. In this note I hope to show not only that the story is native in the sense that it must
have existed in the Islands from pre-Spanish times, but also that the Bagobo version represents a
connecting link between the other Philippine forms and the original source of the whole cycle, a
Buddhistic Jtaka. Merely from the number of Philippine versions already collected, it seems reasonable
to suspect that the story is Malayan: it is found from one end of the Archipelago to the other, and the
wild tribes have versions as well as the civilized. In addition to our one Tagalog and two Pampangan
versions, five other Philippine forms already exist in print, and may be cited for comparison. These are
the following:

The Turtle and the Monkey (Tagalog: Ang Pagong at ang Matsing or Si Pagong at si Matsing) also known
as The Monkey and the Turtle is a Philippine fable. It involves the tortoise outwitting a monkey over a
banana tree. The story was Popularized by Jose Rizal, who made a publication of the story in English in
the July 1989 issue of Trbner's Oriental Record in England, which is considered to be the formal
beginning of Philippine children's literature.[1][2]

The origin of the story can be traced to the Ilocano. The Ilocano version of the story offers an
explanation on why monkeys don't eat meat. Versions of the story has a common theme of a weaker
but cunning character (the tortoise or turtle) winning over a stronger adversary (the monkey).[3]

During his visit to Juan Luna in January 1886 in France, Rizal illustrated the story in 34 plates which he
made in an album belonging Luna's wife. Rizal is considered as the first Filipino cartoonist for this feat
and for illustrating five tales by Hans Christian Andersen which Rizal. Rizal did The Tortoise and the
Monkey and the five Andersen tales in Tagalog.[4][5]

sailing, but you know neither of you would hurt each other You don't need a friend that takes you to all
the parties, you need a friend who takes care of you when you may have had a few too many drinks, a
friend that you would happily babysit if they had too many drinks. You don't need a friend that changes
around different people, you need a friend that stays true to who they are because then you know they
will always stay true to their friendships. You don't need a friend who gets mad at you when they do the
same things they get mad at you about, you need a friend who doesn't manipulate you, you need a

It is so easy for someone to think they are a true friend, but when it comes down to it, true friends will

friendship so highly, it is hard to find qualities like that in someone, not everyone is willing to put up
with you. Not everyone is willing to put in effort everyday. Not everyone is going to be there for you or
be strong enough to lift you up. And though it may suck, it's ok. If someone cannot lift you up or stand
behind you, it's probably because they need to work on themselves, or they were just not meant to be
in your life. You cannot force a friendship and you cannot force someone to stay in your life, so if
someone is not being a true friend, cut them out, it will be ok. It may hurt for awhile, but soon enough
you will meet someone who is willing to be a true friend to you. And as they say about relationships, you
will then understand why no one else was able to be a true friend to you.

But you cannot expect for them to be the only ones putting in effort and doing these things for a
friendship. You need to put in effort everyday, lift them up, and act as a true friend to them. Once you
