DIAGNOSTIC WRITTEN TEST
ACTIVITY A
20 1 Choose from the words below two aspects that you find essential for a true friendship.
Justify your two choices in a total of 30-40 words.
20 2 Complete this poem (author unknown) with the words in the box.
My best friend
Probably my best friend is one of my schoolmates.
Her name is Marcela and we have known each other
since we were 8 years old. If I were to describe how
she looks, I would say she is very pretty. She has short
5 brown hair, brown almond-shaped eyes, a small nose
and a small pointed chin. She is not very tall but not
short either and she is quite slim. She doesn't like to
dress up, so I usually see her wearing jeans and a T-
shirt or sweater.
10 It seems like she and I are always talking or laughing
about something. She has a very nice personality and a
wonderful sense of humour, but she can also get a little
depressed from time to time. I can always count on her to
be honest and to give me the best advice.
15 We are interested in many of the same hobbies. We both enjoy music, playing the guitar and
singing. We like going to the cinema, but sometimes can't agree on which movie to see. Sometimes
we just walk around, trying to find a new area of the city to explore. We both like travelling, reading,
and swimming. Sometimes during the summer, I go with her and her family to their summer house,
which is located next to a large lake. We usually spend most of the day swimming or exploring the
20 area, but sometimes we take a small row boat and go fishing. In the evenings we might walk into town
and see a movie or stay at home and watch television. Whatever we're doing, it's always fun to be
with her.
I know I can rely on her. Even when our lives get busy, we still make time to see each other. I can't
imagine going to school and not having her there. Since I am better in maths and science and she is
25 better in English and languages, we can always help each other if we get confused about a difficult
homework assignment. We are lucky that we complement each other so well and that we get along
so well. I hope that our friendship will continue and be just as strong after we graduate from high
school. We would like to study at the same university.

ACTIVITY B
Read the following text.
Michael Phelps
Michael Fred Phelps was born on June 30, 1985 in
Baltimore, Maryland, the youngest of three children.
His father, Fred, an all-around athlete, was a state
trooper; mother Debbie was a middle-school principal.
5 When Phelps's parents divorced in 1994, he and his
two older sisters, Whitney and Hilary, went to live with
their mother, with whom Michael grew very close.
Phelps began swimming when his sisters
joined a local swimming team. After he saw swimmers Tom Malchow and Tom Dolan
10 compete at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, Phelps began to dream of becoming a
champion. He launched his swimming career at the Loyola High School pool. He met his
coach, Bob Bowman, who immediately recognised Phelps's talents and fierce s ense of
competition. They began an intense training regime together and, by 1999, Phelps had
made the U.S. National B Team.
15 At the age of 15, Phelps became the youngest American male swimmer at an Olympic
Games in 68 years and, in the spring of 2001, he set the world record in the 200-metre
butterfly, becoming the youngest male swimmer in history to ever set a world swimming record.
He then broke his own record at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, earning
his first international medal.
20 Several world records and medals followed, until he became a superstar at the 2004
Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, winning eight medals (including six gold), tying with Soviet
gymnast Aleksandr Dityatin (1980) for the most medals in a single Olympic Games.
In 2012, Phelps's Olympic medals increased to 22, setting a new record for most Olympic
medals and beating gymnast Larisa Latynina's prior record of 18.
25 In addition to his successful swimming career, Phelps has written two books. His second book,
No Limits: The Will to Succeed, hit bookstores on December 9, 2008. Phelps also co-founded
the nonprofit organisation Swim with the Stars, which holds camps for swimmers of all ages.

ACTIVITY B
Read the following text.
Importance of English
You should not be surprised to know that English is the second most spoken language after
Mandarin. To add on to this fact, English is the native language of more than 350 million people
worldwide. Undoubtedly, the popularity of the language has made English the international
language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation,
5 engineering, tourism, UN & NATO armed forces, Hollywood films and the best pop and rock
music in the world. Want anymore? Apart from these unfamiliar and strange facts, there are
several other reasons that underline the importance of learning the universal language, English.
Jobs
10 Most of the businesses engaged in dealing with international clients and suppliers prefer using
English as the primary source of communication. It serves as the most common and user-friendly
language to communicate with English-speaking customers and professionals. It is also the first
choice for oral interpreting and written translation. So, to make the best out of the available
opportunities, one has to be highly fluent in English.
15 Travel
Languages differ from country to country and sometimes from region to region. Thus, if you
your rescue as it is a global language spoken by more than 900 million people across the globe,
either as their native language or their second language.
Education
20 People not only travel to places worldwide for business and pleasure, but they leave their
homeland and travel to another country for study purposes as well. In many countries you will find
English as the main medium of teaching, as it is practically impossible for a foreigner to study in
the local language (or languages) of the country. Education has increased the importance of
25 English to a great extent.
Internet
Though the Internet is used in many other languages, English still remains the core language
for most Internet users. Most of the information and websites are available in English only and it
becomes very difficult to translate every appropriate page into the language of the country
30 concerned. With the growth of the Internet in education and E-commerce, the English language,
by default, is bound to grow.

ACTIVITY A
15 1 Complete the following text with six words from the box.
Use each word only once.
The a) _________________ of advertising on our lives, for both children and adults, has changed over the
years. In the early days, advertising for b) _________________ and other products for children was primarily
targeted toward parents and their message was direct. Today c) _________________ messages are more
sophisticated, more pervasive, and are aimed directly at "hooking" kids at a very d) _________________
age. Children today watch far more e) _________________ than children did in the early days of TV. In
addition, they are f) ________________ (via computer or smart phone) where advertising is prevalent as
well. The influence of advertising has permeated much of what our children do and see.
10 2 Are you influenced by the media? Give two reasons for your answer.
Write a total of 30-40 words.
The media make huge sums of money from the advertising they sell and that we are exposed
to. We buy what we are told is good after seeing thousands of adverts; we make our buying
decisions based on what we read in newspapers and magazines, hear on the radio and see on
TV. On the Internet, we are specifically targeted. We assume that products and services are
5 trustworthy on the basis that everyone else we know is buying them, but their decisions are also
influenced by the media and may be wrong. Millions of people must have died or become
seriously ill because of tobacco advertising before governments eventually banned it.
Teenagers are especially impressionable. They tend to copy and buy what their favourite
10 celebrities do, wear and advertise and what they think is acceptable and fashionable, without
realizing that their tastes and judgements have been imposed on them by the media. However,
influences can be positive as well as negative.
For example, if there is a safe sport that is getting a lot of media attention and gains popularity
among your friends and acquaintances, you will be more likely to want to practise it. The result
15 is that you will have fun, make more friends and be healthier because of the exercise you are
doing. On the other hand, you may be influenced to take part in a dangerous or violent sport.
Some people want to imitate the frenetic lifestyle of pop and movie stars, complete with drugs
and alcohol, though we know that many of them die young. And we all suffer from constant
exposure to the barrage of sex and violence on popular TV programmes and to advertisements
20 for junk food.
Young people are in a stage of life when they want to be accepted by their peers and they
want to be loved and successful. The media create their own version of the ideal image of
beautiful men and women and tell you what the characteristics of a successful person are. Its
a subliminal way to tell you that if you are not like them youre not cool yet, so its time to buy the
25 stuff they buy and look like them.
One obvious sign of the negative influences on teenagers (and adults) is body weight obesity
on the one hand and anorexia on the other. Many adolescents are or should be fighting
obesity but are constantly tempted by thousands of advertisements for fattening junk food.
Conversely, others, usually girls, are undernourished because they want to look as slim as
30 fashion models and thin celebrities. They are obsessed with losing weight even when they are
not fat, so they develop eating disorders which lead to severe health problems and even death.
