What Does The Tool Do?

This tool enables the customer to upgrade the printer software (or firmware) to later
versions for enhanced features. It includes a simple interface to make the installation
process easier to perform.

This tool is compatible with printer firmware 3.69 and above.

For printers with firmware versions 4.14 and above, an enhanced communication
process is implemented that improves the robustness of the transfer process.

Installation

The tool is automatically installed as part of the Sauven printer software suite.

Insert the CD and double click on setup.exe. Follow the on screen instructions to
complete the installation.

Note : for Windows Vista, Sauven Marking recommend installing the application as
an Administrator and turning off User Account Control during installation.

Requirements

Microsoft Windows XP/Vista, serial port or USB / Ethernet to serial converter.

Launching

From the Sauven Printer Suite panel, press the Upload Printer Firmware button.

The program initially checks to see if a valid serial port can be found using the current
settings. If the settings are not valid, the program will prompt the user to select a port
and configuration. Please see Appendix 1 for further details.

If the serial port can be found, the main screen will be displayed. All the screen
options have tool tips available. Moving the mouse over an item will display a small
reminder to the function.

Change Printer ID Type the ID of the remote printer (range 1 to 254).

Ensure this matches the ID of the connected printer. If
the serial port settings and ID match those of the printer,
the program will automatically identify a printer that is
connected and switched on.

Change Serial Port Settings Click on this button to change the serial port or settings.
Once the port has been configured, the settings are
automatically saved in a file for future use. See
Appendix 1 for further details.

Firmware Filename The name of the firmware file is displayed here.

Open Firmware Press this button to load a firmware file. This button
will be inactive if a transfer is currently in progress.

Firmware Load Progress Whilst the program loads the printer firmware ready for
transfer, a bar will display the progress.

Start a transfer

Locating/Found Printer This indicates whether the program has found a printer
using the current settings or is still looking for a printer
to respond. When a printer is located, the machine type
and current firmware version is displayed.

Transfer Progress This progress bar will show the amount of the transfer
completed. A red activity indicator will flash to show
that a transfer is in progress. The percentage of the
transfer completed will be shown on the right hand of
the progress bar.

Operation

Select serial port on PC and match communication settings to that on the

printer see Appendix 1 of this manual for the PC software and Appendix 2e
of the printer manual for further details.

Connect the printer to the PC using a straight through cable and switch on.

If a valid serial port is selected, the program will automatically begin to look
for a connected printer.

Load the firmware file by pressing button. Locate the firmware file you
want to load and press Open.

Restarting The Printer

Switch the printer off then on to use the new firmware. A reset of the printer is
recommended to clear out old settings whenever a firmware update is applied. Please
see the printer manual for further details.

Error Messages

If the printer has existing firmware version 4.14 and above, a retry mechanism is
employed to deal with any temporary breaks in communication. For versions
previous to this, any problems with communication will result in the process being
immediately aborted with one of the following error messages;

This error is produced as a result of a printer response not being received within a
time limit. This can be due to;

Break in communication with printer running firmware version 4.13 and

below.
Printer switched off during the download process.
Cable removed during the download process.
Communication settings changed during the download process.
Converter unit switched off during the download process (if applicable).

If this error occurs, please check the cable is securely connected, communication
settings match those of the printer and any converter unit used is switched on. Click
OK to clear the message and retry the download process.

Appendix 1 : Selecting And Configuring The Port

The program can support 8 COM ports (either direct serial, USB or Ethernet
converters) at a variety of different speeds and settings. To adjust the settings, press
the following button;

The program will display the Comms Interface options listed below. Use the drop
down selection to change the appropriate property. Please ensure the baudrate,
databits, stopbits and parity settings match those on the printer otherwise
communication cannot be made. In addition, ensure the printer is connected to the
appropriate COM port and if applicable, any converter used is switched on.

Port The COM port to use.

Baudrate The speed of the communication. Use the fastest setting if possible. If
there are consistent problems with the download process, lower the
speed to next option (ensure the printer matches) and try again.

Databits The number of bits used to represent the downloaded information. The
default of 8 databits should not need to be changed.

Stopbits The number of bits used to separate downloaded information. The

default of 1 stopbit should not need to be changed.

Parity The type of framing used. The default of None should not need to be
changed.

Press the OK button to accept the changes, store them to a file and apply them. If
the port cannot be opened, the following message will be displayed.

If this occurs, press OK and change the port (or ensure any converter is connected
and switched on as required).

To exit from the Configuration screen without using any new changes, press the
Cancel button.
