FORMAT
Class meets MW or TTH depending on sections. You are welcome to visit the other
lecture as space allows but must take exams in your registered section. Attendance is
required.

There is also a required laboratory section that will meet once per week. Attendance is
required.

This class is cotaught by Dr. Shanahan and Dr. Grand. Please contact Dr. Shanahan with
any logistical questions or concerns. Graduate TAs will be responsible for laboratory
sections.

Lectures will be in Jackson Geology Building (JGB) 2.324, the Boyd Auditorium.
Lecture section 1: MW 4-5 p.m.
Lecture section 2: TTh 11 a.m. 12 p.m.
Each unique number corresponds to a unique combination of lecture and lab meeting
times.
Labs will be in JGB 2.306. Participation in your assigned lab section is required. There
are no labs during the first week of class; GEO 303 labs begin the week of Monday,
Sept 3.

COURSE OBJECTIVE
Prerequisites: none
Welcome to GEO 303, a one-semester survey of the entire field of geological science.
Our main course objective is for you to begin to think like a geologist. Geoscience
thinking requires solving problems in the context of open and dynamic systems,
reasoning in 3-D and 4-D at many temporal and spatial scales, and tackling problems
with no clear answer.
Course material is loosely classified into three main themes of earth systems science: the
configuration of the earth (the shapes, sizes, and compositions of its parts), the processes
that constantly change the configuration, and the origin and history of the earth. GEO
303 treats all of these categories, and we will emphasize one or another of them
differently along the way. Geology includes a great variety of subject material, and we
will draw on (and review) fundamentals of other disciplines like chemistry, biology,
physics, mathematics and economics.

GRADES
Final course letter grades will be assigned on the +/- scale following the standard UT
grade boundaries. Final grade boundaries are typically curved" and the adjustments vary
slightly each semester. However, do not expect the curve to be very large.

A = 94-100 A- = 90-93 B+ = 87-89 B = 84-86 B- = 80-83 C+ = 77-79 C = 74-76 C- =

70-73 D+ = 67-69 D = 64-66 D- = 60-63 F= 0-60

Weights assigned 1st lecture exam 14%

to grades: 2nd lecture exam 14%
3rd lecture exam 14%
Laboratory grade (see page 4) 35%
Lecture final exam 17%
Lecture participation (iClicker) 3%
Lecture review homework 3%
100%

REQUIRD MATERIALS
You will need a notebook, extra paper, a folder or binder, and writing utensils for taking
notes and doing activities in lecture and lab. A ruler and colored pencils will be useful in
lab.
Canvas access: We will post course information, powerpoint files, review materials,
required electronic homework assignments, and grades for lecture and laboratory on the
GEO 303 Canvas site. Canvas access is required and you should check the site
frequently.
Textbook and lab manual (combined into a single volume, e-book license included):
Long, L. E., 2015, GEOLOGY: 17th ed., white cover, Pearson Learning Solutions, 561
pages. License must be registered on Canvas by Monday, September 26.
iClicker 2: Your remote must be registered on Canvas ( due THE SECOND WEEK OF
CLASS). Please check that it is working on Canavs > Grades. You are required to bring
your remote to every lecture, but because everyone occasionally forgets, we will drop
two iClicker sessions with no penalty. We will use frequency AA. REEF polling is
allowed but you are responsible for getting it to work.
Electronic homework: Online lecture review questions will be provided on the Canvas
website. These questions will be due 1 week from the Friday they are assigned at 5 pm.
No credit is given for late homeworks. You are allowed multiple tries to get each
question correct.

Lab pre-homework assignments will be due at the beginning of following weeks lab.

OTHER DETAILS
Absences: If you know you will be absent from an exam for a legitimate reason, please
provide Dr. Shanahan with documentation as soon as possible. Unexcused absences will
generally result in a grade of zero, but if you have an emergency, let her know as soon as
possible. If you must miss a lab session or assignment, contact your TA. We will not
grant excused absences for lecture participation.
Statute of limitations: If you wish to appeal a grade received on an exam or other
assignment your appeal must be made within 7 days from the time it is handed back. No
appeals will be considered after that deadline.
Students with disabilities: Upon request, UT provides appropriate academic
accommodations for qualified students with disabilities (Division of Diversity and
Community Engagement, Services for Students with Disabilities, 512-471-6259,
diversity.utexas.edu). If you already have permission for accommodations in GEO 303,
please send Dr. Shanahan a brief email message immediately and give her your SSD
letter as soon as possible. You will not need to provide a second letter for your TA.
Computers and other electronic devices are allowed in GEO 303, but phones should be
turned off during lecture and lab and internet use is strongly discouraged. If you wish to
make audio or video recordings of our lectures, please ask us first.
Academic honesty: Our desire is for every student to have equal opportunity to succeed
in GEO 303, and we have no tolerance for any type of dishonesty. Sharing of exam, quiz
or homework questions prior to grading is cheating and will result in serious disciplinary
action. Loaning your iClicker to another student to record your attendance when you are
absent is cheating. We also request that you do not repost or discuss GEO 303 materials
on any internet sites that are not available to all GEO 303 students.
