school uniform is from the 19th century; its very
different to the clothes you wear to school now!

In our next room , there are lots of famous movie
posters this one is from Audrey Hepburns

PRESENTER Youre listening to Famous ghosts

and Im Brian Watson, here to tell you
more scary stories. Story 1 is about SS
Watertown, a ship that sailed down
the Panama Canal in 1924. Two men
had the job of cleaning the ship but
they unfortunately died from breathing
dangerous gas. After their death, other
people on the ship said that they saw the
faces of the sailors in the water and a few
people took photographs of the ghostly
faces. You can see these photographs
on the Internet write to us and tell us
what you think.
Story 2 is about a famous ghost who
lived nearly 500 years ago, in Aston
Hall, Birmingham. Sir Thomas Holt
was a friend of King Charles the first.
Sir Thomass daughter fell in love with
a man who Sir Thomas didnt like. The
daughter met the man in secret but
in the end, Sir Thomas found out. He
locked his daughter in her room at Aston
Hall for 16 years. She ate and drank very
little and wore only grey clothes. She
finally went mad and died. Now visitors
to the Hall often see a lady wearing grey.
Story 3 is about a ghost who died in
Cambridgeshire. In October 1948,
Colonel Mellows travelled home with
his friend. They drove across the railway
line but as they crossed, a train travelling
very fast, crashed into their car. Colonel
Mellows and his dog were killed straight
away. People still see the ghost of the
Colonel driving up to the railway line,
hoping for a safe journey across.
Thats it for tonight I hope you sleep
well.

MARY Oh, Im reading this really sad book and its a
true story.
DAISY Whats it about?
MARY Well, its about this 57-year-old woman called
Rosie Swale Pope whose husband died.
DAISY Oh, that is sad.
MARY Yes, but thats not why Im crying. Its what
happened after that.
DAISY OK, go on.
MARY Well, Rosie decided to do something for her
husband after he died so she went on a run
a very long one. She ran for 20,000 miles, all
around the world.
DAISY Really? Thats amazing. How long did it take
her?
MARY Five years; she crossed seven continents
and used 53 pairs of shoes! On a good day
she ran 30 miles, on a bad day she only
did 500 metres, and nearly died in freezing
temperatures of -62 degrees centigrade.
DAISY Wow!
MARY Yes and she had some scary and funny things
happen to her on her trip. Three men tried
to kill her and one man stole from her. 29
people asked her to be their wife!
DAISY But did she die in the end? Is that why youre

Rosie got home in the end and saw her family

PATRICIA Yes, youre right and elephants also have
much larger ears than mammoths.
ANNETTE Why is that?
PATRICIA Well, its for the same reason that
mammoths had hair they lived in
very cold places and small ears meant
that they could keep warmer. Elephants
move their large ears around when they
want to get colder...
ANNETTE Because they live in much hotter places,
like Africa and India.
PATRICIA And thats why scientists think all the
mammoths died because the earth got
much hotter.
ANNETTE I see. And why is a tiger in your

Unit 8 Test

Listen to the radio programme.

Its that time in the show that we give our bedtime

book suggestions. This week were looking at books
for children and were going to look at Charlie and
the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl, the famous
childrens writer.
One of our young readers, Freya is going to tell you
the story:
Charlie and the Chocolate factory is a strange and
funny book. Its also quite scary at times. It begins
with Charlie, who lives with his family his mother,
father and four grandparents in one small house.
The family arent rich, but they love each other very
much. In the town where they live, there is a famous
place which makes chocolate called a chocolate
factory. Many years ago, the factory closed people
didnt visit it for years, no one saw anybody go out
or in. But the factory didnt stop making chocolate.
Who is making it? Nobody knows. One day, Charlies
grandfather Joe sees a competition in the newspaper
it invites four children to find a golden ticket in
one of the factorys chocolate bars. If the child finds
the ticket, they win a day at the factory. Charlie is very
excited, but also unhappy he hasnt got any money
to buy chocolate. His lovely grandfather Joe gives him
some money and Charlie buys some chocolate no
golden ticket! The next day, Charlie finds a pound in
the road and buys another two chocolate bars. The
first one hasnt got a golden ticket, but the second
one has! Everyone in Charlies family offers to come
with Charlie to the factory, but Charlie invites his
grandpa Joe. On the special day, four children arrive
at the factory. They meet Mr Wonka - the strange
and wonderful man whose factory it is and see
the fantastic things inside the factory. There is one
problem though the children get excited about
the things they see and they do bad things. They get
hurt by the things they do. For example, Mr Wonka
tells one child not to eat a fruit sweet, but she does.
She becomes huge and purple and Mr Wonka sends
her away to get better. Bad things happen to all the
children, but not Charlie because he is good. At
the end of the story, Mr Wonka gives his wonderful
factory to Charlie.

Term test 3, Units 7-8

Listen to the radio programme.

Hello and welcome to Home time, the programme

which helps you to do things big and small around
the house. Im Caroline Brady and, in todays show, Im
going to be answering some of the questions you sent
to me in your letters and emails. The first letter Im
going to talk about is from a Miss Pippa Cole gosh,
shes only 14 years old! Pippa writes: Dear Caroline, Im
going to be 15 in two weeks time and Id love to invite
all my friends to celebrate with me. The only problem
is that I cant cook. Can you give me some suggestions
for food which is easy to prepare and not expensive to
buy I only get 6 pocket money a week. Well, Pippa,
thats not difficult so dont worry. As everyone who has
friends to dinner knows, you dont want to spend a lot
of time in the kitchen cooking ; you want to be with
your friends . So, heres my advice: for your main meal,
I like chicken and home-made chips. You need to put
the chicken in the cooker the day before and cook it
for about two hours. Ask your mum or dad to help you
and make sure you read the information on the packet
before you start. On the morning of your birthday, put
some potatoes in some very hot water for about 20
minutes, then take them out of the water, wait for them
to get cold, cut them into small pieces and put them
in the oven for about 40 minutes until theyre nice
and brown ta da youve got chips! Put small bits of
chicken and chips and some salad on three big plates
and invite your friends to help themselves. A buffet like
this is a lot more fun than a sit down dinner. I hope
that helps. Have fun!
Now for my second letter. Well, it must be the week for
young people because this is from Jake, whos 13. Hiya,
Jake. He writes: Dear Caroline. My parents make me
wash up every evening after dinner and they dont want
to buy a dishwasher. Every time I wash up, my mum
gets angry because the glasses, knives and forks are not
clean and she makes me wash them all over again. All I
want to do is play on my computer. Can you help? Oh
dear, Jake. I suggest that you wash the glasses up first
you need really hot, clean, water for these make sure
you wear gloves. Then you can do the cutlery and, after
that, the plates. Good luck!

LYNN Anyway, it was Amys idea to get Dionne
to sing while she played the guitar and
then put the video on YouTube.
JESS Cool. Then what happened?
LYNN Well, Dionne got quite famous, quite
quickly, and last year in October, her
first record sold very well in the shops.
JESS Do you think shes only famous because
shes got a famous friend whos helping
her?
LYNN I dont think so. Amy Winehouse says
that Dionne is a better singer than she
was at the same age. It wasnt Amy who
discovered Dionne though it was her
aunt who heard her sing first and sent
her to a singing school.
JESS What sort of songs are on the record?
LYNN Well, theyre not new songs Dionne
chose her favourite songs by famous
singers. I read that her mother played
the songs all the time around the house
when she was really little and thats when
Dionne started to sing.
