OBJECTIVE:
Tointroducetothestudentsthefundamentalsofdesignanddevelopmentofdesignvocabulary,to
nurturedesignthinkingandtoenablethemtoapplythesamethoughtprocessindevelopingthree
dimensionalcompositions.
Thestudioalsointroducesdrawingsandmodelsastoolsforconceptualisation,organisationand
furtheringofdesignthoughtprocess.
Thisstudioteachesthestudentstolearnthebasicsofgraphicdesignandthreedimensional
composition.ThestudioalsohasadirectinterfacewiththeGraphicDesignStudioandArchitectural
Workshop.

CourseContent
Introductiontoelementsofdesignlikepoint,line,plane,solidandvoid.Understandingtheimportanceof
designprincipleslikebalance,harmony,rhythm,contrast,symmetry,scale,proportions,colours,tones,textures
etc.Studyofsolids&voidstoevolvesculpturalforms&spaces;exploreplayoflight&shadeandapplicationof
colour.Introductiontoexternal&internalforms,analyticalappraisalofforms,theirquality;Conceptofspace,
interrelationshipbetweenspace,volumeandorder;Variationsinformswithplanerjuxtapositions.
Anthropometricstudyandergonomicsofhumanfigure(includingphysicallyhandicappedpersons),dimensions
offurniturerelationshipwithhumananthropometrics(likeinkitchens,toilets,bedrooms,staircasesetc.)with
freehanddrawingofhumanfigures,vehicles,trees,buildingsetc.tohaveabetterunderstandingofproportion.

ExercisesinPoint,lineandshapes;Exploringcolourschemesandtheirapplicationinavisualcompositionandin
architecturalformsandspaces;Collagewithagiventheme;Toachievefocusandcentreofinterestindesign
usingdifferenttexturalelements;Developmentofgeometricpatternbydivision,subtraction,andaddition,and
expressthemwiththeuseofcolours;Two&ThreedimensionalDesignExercisesinvolvingrealandimaginary
objects,drawingcompositionsandmodels,toformanappropriatebaseforsubsequentArchitecturaldesign
andtheory.Studymodelsofdifferentmaterialsviz.paper,clay,wax,soap,wiresetc.madebythemselves.
Understandingofscaleandproportionsthroughmeasurementofspacesusingonlyhumanbodyelements.
Exercisesinordertoexperimentbasicproportions,bodyrelationsandspatialconcepts.Layoutoffurniture
basedonanthropometrics.Anthropometricsforphysicallychallengedpersons.Exercisesinordertoexperiment
basicproportions,bodyrelationsandspatialconcepts.Designingofbasicbuildingcomponents(likekitchens,
bedrooms,toiletsetc.)Designexerciseonthresholdconditionsandsmallscaledomesticspace.Studentswill
learnskillsinproblemsolving,visualization,oral,andgraphiccommunication.Fieldtripstorelevantarchitectural
sites.
