(b) (i) The following measurements were made on an amplifier :

- With port 1 open, voltage of 50 V is applied at port 2. The voltage at port 1
and the current at port 2 are 50 mV and 2.5 A respectively.
- With port 2 short circuited, current of 2.5 mA is applied at port 1. The
voltage at port 1 is 1.25 V and the current at port 2 is 3.75 A.
Based on the measurement, determine the h parameters for the amplifier.

(ii) If the source of 2 Vrms with a 100 internal impedance is connected to port
1 of the amplifier with the h parameters obtained from (i), determine
whether the source is safe to drive a speaker modelled as a 32 resistance
with a power rating of 100 W as shown in Figure Q.1(b-ii).

Q.2 (a) Three loads (Load 1, Load 2 and Load 3) are connected to a voltage source as
shown in Figure Q.2(a).
(i) Determine the power factor for each load.
(ii) Find complex power for each load

(b) Figure Q.2(b) shows two parallel loads connected to supply voltage of 10 kV at
frequency of 50 Hz. Load A is a resistive load with power of 50 kW. Load B is a
set of motors that operate at 100kVA, 0.75 lagging power factor. By taking supply
voltage as a reference, determine:
(i) The total current supplied to the loads and the overall power factor of the
system.
(ii) The reactive power in kVAR and the capacitance required to improve the
overall power factor to 0.96 lagging.
(iii) The current drawn from the supply under new power factor conditions.

Q.3 (a) (i) A balanced three phase -connected load with an impedance of (40 j30)
/phase is supplied by a 3-phase source with the magnitude of the line to
line voltage is 415 Vrms. Determine the line currents. The sources are in a
positive sequence with Vab set as the reference voltage.

(ii) A balanced three-phase Y-connected load requires the total power of

120 kW at a lagging power factor of 0.8. The line impedance is (0.05 +
j0.25) /phase. The phase voltage at the terminals of the load is 400 Vrms
and the phase sequence is positive.
i- Construct a single-phase equivalent circuit of the system.
ii- Find the line current.
iii- Find the line voltage at the sending end of the line.
iv- Find the power factor at the sending end of the line.
(13 marks)

(b) A three phase 4-wires, star or Yconnected generator with line voltage of 415
Vrms, 50 Hz is connected to an unbalanced 4-wires, Y-connected load. The loads
are as follows:
Zan = (80 + j50)
Zbn = (60 - j40)
Zcn = (80 + j50)
By taking Van as a reference and assuming the system is in positive sequence:
(i) Sketch the three phase system as describe above. Label clearly all the line
and phase voltage as well as line currents.
(ii) Determine total real power consumed by the load.
(iii) If the neutral wire is disconnected from the network, sketch the connection
for the measurement of total real power using the wattmeter method.
