PassingSightDistance
PassingSightDistance(PSD)istheminimumsightdistancethatisrequiredonahighway,generallyatwo
lane,twodirectionalone,thatwillallowadrivertopassanothervehiclewithoutcollidingwithavehiclein
theopposinglane.Thisdistancealsoallowsthedrivertoabortthepassingmaneuverifdesired.AASHTO
definesPSDashavingthreemaindistancecomponents:(1)Distancetraveledduringperceptionreaction
timeandacclerationintotheopposinglane,(2)Distancerequiredtopassintheopposinglane,(3)Distance
necessarytocleartheslowervehicle.
Thefirstdistancecomponent isdefinedas:
where
=timeforinitialmaneuver,
=acceleration(km/h/sec),
=averagespeedofpassingvehicle(km/hr),
=differenceinspeedsofpassingandimpedervehicles(km/hr).
Theseconddistancecomponent isdefinedas:
