THE CORRELATION OF PREMATURE RUPTURE OF MEMBRANE (PROM)

AND THE APGAR SCORES OF THE NEWBORN IN A PREMATURE LABOR

ABSTRACT

It is to be highlighted that the rupture of the membranes often becomes an entrance gate for the
germs to the body. A PROM incident which is followed by bacterial infection may upsurge the
incidence of the prenatal morbidity and mortality. Worth to know that the infection caused by
the bacteria potentially triggers the new born infants to have low Apgar scores. The purpose of
this research is to determine the correlation between PROM incidents and the Apgar scores of
the infants in a premature labor process. This study was conducted from January to December
2016. This research is a quantitative research of an analytical study design with cross sectional
approach. The number of the sample of this study is 91 respondents selected through systematic
random sampling. The univariate analysis is presented in a form of frequency distribution table
and the bivariate analysis by chi-square statistical test. The results present that from 32 mothers
with PROM, it is found 20 newborns (62.5%) with high Apgar score, yet, the other 12 newborns
(37.5%) with low Apgar score. Meanwhile, from 59 mothers with no PROM incident is
obtained that 53 infants (89.8%) have high Apgar score, nevertheless also discovered 6 infants
(10.2%) get low Apgar score. These results are supported by the p = 0.004 (<0.05) which
construes that there is a significant correlation between PROM and Apgar score of the
newborns in a premature delivery process at Santa Elisabeth Hospital of Batam in 2016. It is
hoped that this research may contribute to the mothers as well as other family members in
enhancing their knowledge about premature labor and Apgar score of the baby, thus, it is able
to diminish the incidence of Premature Rupture of Membranes.
