Answer All QUESTIONS
11. (a) Based on small perturbation theory, derive the linearized velocity potential equation for
compressible flow. (16)
Or
(b). A supersonic flow with M 1=1.5, P1=1*105N/m2 and T1=288k is expanded around a sharp
corner through a deflection angle of 200 .Calculate M2, P2, T2, P02 and T02. (16)
12. (a). Discuss in detail the principle and methodology adopted in methods of characteristics
deriving necessary equations. (16)
Or
(b). for the flat plate show in fig. calculate the mach numbers and the slip stream. (16)
13. (a) (i)Show that the upper branch of Fanno curve represents subsonic flow and the lower
branch represents supersonic flow. (08)
(ii) Show that the point of maximum entropy on the Rayleigh represents the point where the
Mach number is unity. (08)

Or
(b) Air enter a constant area combustion chamber with a Mach no 0.2 and stagnation
temperature of 393k, what is the amount of heat to be added to unit mass of air for unit Mach
number 0.7 at exit? Also calculate the maximum amount of heat that can be added of unit
mass of air. (16)

14. (a). Air flows under adiabatic conditions through a pipe of diameter 0.15m. At the inlet the
Mach no is 0.1 the pressure is 70kpa the temperature is 308k. The mean friction factor is
0.005.if the exit Mach no 0.8, calculate the length of the pipe, the exit temperature and exit
pressure. (16)

Or
(b).(i) Using linearized subsonic potential equation, derive an expression for the co efficient of
pressure over a thin body at a small angle of attack. (08)
(ii) A flat of chord 1 m is kept at a small angle of 3 degrees in a parallel supersonic stream of
Mach number 2.5 .The free stream static pressure is 100kpa,and the temperature is
280k.Determine the static pressure on the upper side of the flat plate. (08)

15. (a). (i) The exit pressure and temperature are 125kPa and 20 0C respectively as air flows
through a 25cm diameter pipe at 1200m 3/min. The pipe is 60m long. Assuming the friction
factor f=0.005 estimate the inlet the pressure and temperature. (08)
(ii). Air flows above a frictionless surface having a sharp corner. The flow angles and Mach
number in downstream from the corner are 60 0 and 4.0 respectively. Calculate the upstream
the upstream Mach number for flow angle of 15 0 clockwise and 150 counters clockwise.
