The Life of St. Benedict

St. Benedict was born in Norcia around 480 A.D. where after attending
primary schools in Norcia for his education, he went to Rome to broaden his
knowledge of literature and law. Being disgusted with the Political environment in
Rome, he retired to Affile with a group of priests.

It was in Affile where he performed his first miracle of restoring to normal

condition an earthenware wheat sifter which his servant had broken accidentally
and it was due to this miracle that his withdrawal from social life took place.
Living in solitude he was taught the ways of the monks life and 3 years later,
some shepherds befriended Benedict and began to follow his teachings; thus,
came the birth of the principles of the Benedictine Order.

He followed the ancient principles of the Fathers of Christian Monasticism.

He performed a variety of miracles, finding water on a desolate mountain top,
retrieving a bill hooks iron from the bottom of the lake, making one of his fellow
monks walk on water to save someone from drowning and many more.

Through the performance of many miracles, Benedict gained notoriety and

became a saint, preaching and living the word of God.
