This is an introduction to the Wiradjuri (weir rad jury) people of Central

West & Southern NSWs weather seasons. In the text and wheel you can
clearly see there was a reliance on the sky world (stars & planets) to
predict the weather. (Note; In the Southern cross animation the language word for
the Wiilman people is Waitj. In the Wiradjuri peoples language it is Dhinawan (dinner
one)
The following activity relates to information contained within the text
and images of the weather seasons wheel.

Wiradjuris Weather Seasons cycle


5 Seasons
Spring - Yiraga (year-a-ga)
Weather - Cool Rising river levels, Billabongs filling up.
Land animals move off the floodplains.
A time to hunt Kangaroos, emus, possums and collect eggs to eat
Qandong fruit it ripe to eat.

Late Spring Guwayu (Ga-wa-you) Yiraga (year-a-ga)


Weather - warm higher river levels, Billabongs full
Food collected on the flood plains
A time to hunt & eat fish, mussels, yabbies and water edge vegetables were
gathered and eaten. Nardoo can be picked to make damper.
The Koalas can be heard fighting.

Summer - Yiraybang (year-ay-bang)


Weather Hot and dry River levels receding,
Time to hunt in the swamp areas
Fish traps used to catch fish as water levels are dropping. Time to hunt the crayfish,
mussels and water birds Typha roots and wattle seeds ready to eat
The Inland Pigface fruit is ready to eat
The Southern Cross is low in the sky.

Autumn - Bangalang (bang-ga-lang)


Weather - Cool River very low
Land animals coming back to the river areas
A time to eat vegetable roots as main food Windmill grass seeds collected and made
into damper. Emus (Dhinawans)
(din a ones) are laying their eggs.
Dhinawan can be seen under the
Southern Cross in the sky.

Winter Babang (ba-bang)


Weather Cold local rains and
snow on the mountains River low
but rising. Murrawa the west wind
comes.
Hardest time to obtain food Time
to dig out animals hibernating
underground. Move camp away
from the river. The Southern Cross
is high in the sky.
