I am Kavilan Murthi.

At first glance, my appearance will not impress many; my dark complexion and
average build would put off most. Honestly, that is the least of my worries for my dad taught me that
beauty and confidence emanate from within. A strong personality stems from broadening one?s
horizons and travelling does just that because some things cannot be learned from books. I have not
travelled much, so this scholarship presents a real possibility to experience cultures and traditions that
are foreign to me. As the president of the Tamil Language society of my school, I cherish the prospect
of sharing the thoughts, feelings and perspectives of a typical Malaysian Tamil teenager with the rest
of the world. Plus, I have an unwavering drive to excel in whatever I sink my teeth into. This is
reflective of my attitude towards work and my one hundred percent attendance at school for two
consecutive years is a testament to my commitment. There is a fun side to me too. Last year, I
participated in the Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Challenge Merdeka Walk and recently, I helped out at
the YOK Colour Run, a fun event organised by the Johor Student Leaders Council (JSLC). My
expectations are not high but if I am chosen for this programme, I guarantee it will not be in vain. I will
maximise the opportunity given and upon my return, share the wealth of knowledge gained for the
benefit of all.

If awarded this scholarship, I would relish the opportunity to represent my country and work with
people who are culturally different but with similar, innate goals and desires in life.
