QUESTION

Design a stepped shaft to receive 30 kW at 300 rpm and transmit power

through two gears small and big. Small gear should absorb 12 kW while
the bigger gear should absorb the remaining power. The pitch circle
diameter of the small and big gear respectively are 300mm and 600mm,
Also the mass of the small and big gear are 40 kg and 75 kg
respectively. The distance between the center of bearings that supports
the shaft at ends should not exceed 1.8m. The bigger gear should be at
a distance of 500mm from one end of the shaft while the smaller gear
at a distance of 600mm from the other end of shaft. Retaining rings are
provided to arrest the movement of gears axially. Make suitable
assumptions.

600mm 200mm 200 mm 500mm

Given

Small Gear (Gear 1) Bigger Gear(Gear 2)

Power 12 kW 18 kW

Pitch circle
Diameter 300mm 600mm

Mass 40kg 75kg

Speed of operation of shaft = 300 rpm

Assumptions
Total length of the shaft = 1.5m
The mass of the shaft is neglected
Bearings are journal bearings
The power input is through Gear 0
Pressure angle in each gear is assumed to be 14

Torque

Torque in the shaft, T = (p60)/(2N)= (3000060)/(2300)= 955.41

Nm

Torque taken out by G1, T1= (p60)/(2N)= (1200060)/(2300)=382.16

Nm

Torque taken out by G2, T2= (p60)/(2N)= (1800060)/(2300)=573.25

Nm
Vertical Forces on the Shaft
The weight of the gears act on the shaft
W1=459.81=441.45N
W2=759.81=735.75N
Using these values we can find the vertical support reactions at A and B
Rb1.5=(W1.6)+(W21)
Rb=667.08N
Ra=W1+W2- Rb=510.12N

Tangential force on gear1, Ft=Tr = 382.16 0.150=2.547 kN

Tangential force on gear2, Ft=Tr =573.25 0.300=1.790 kN
Net force acting on the smaller gear, F1= Ft /Cos14=2.547/Cos14=2.62kN
Net force acting on the smaller gear, F2= Ft /Cos14=1.790/Cos14=1.844kN
