2. COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is for the English-major students at HITC. The course provides students with basic
knowledge of translation and it helps them get to know some fundamental principles as well as
techniques of translation. In addition, a wide range of grammatical points and lexical resources will
equip students during their translation process. This course provide a good foundation skills and
essential techniques which can greatly contribute to their next translation course, business translation.

3. COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course aims to:
- Provide the students with some useful techniques in translation process;
- Empower the students in translation with some helpful structures;
- Enrich them a wide range of topic-based vocabulary;
4. COURSE OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, the students will be able to:
- Understand the different techniques used in translation process;
- Apply them in translating;
- Recall useful structures in certain translation situations;
- Attain a certain knowledge of vocabulary;
- Deploy vocabulary in translating process.
5. COURSE ASSESSMENT
[1] Formative assessment: 40%
Attendance: 1.5
Participation: 2.0
Group work: 1.5
15-minute tests: 1.0
2 conditional tests *: test 1 (2.0) + test 2 (2.0)
[2] Final assessment examination *: 60%
Summative assessment = [1] + [2]
* Test format: 2 passages, about 150 words/ each.
Task 1: Translate into Vietnamese
Task 2: Translation into English
6. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EXPECTATIONS
- Regular attendance is required. 4 absences during the course disqualify the students from
doing the final exam
- Students must join each class having already read the material to be covered that day.
- Group-work assignment should be submitted punctually.
- English speaking is required during class time.
