Class Syllabus

Course Title: Health 1

Teacher:

Course Description:
Health 1 is a required course designed to help students gain health literacy. Health Literacy is the capacity of
individuals to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services, and the competence to use
such information and services in ways which enhance health. Health Education teaches students the skills
necessary to lead healthy lives mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially.

Throughout the semester, the major topics we will be taking an in-depth look at are: Personal Health & Goal
Setting, Human Body Systems, Nutrition & Physical Fitness, Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs, Disease
Prevention, Healthy Sexuality, Safety & Environmental Health.

Grading:
Exceeds Proficiency/Excede proficiencia 4
The student shows they understand and have learned the standard
being taught, plus they demonstrate extended learning.
Meets Proficiency/Logra proficiencia 3
The student shows they understand and have learned the standard
being taught.
Approaching Proficiency/Cercano a lograr proficiencia 2
The student is close to meeting the requirements to show they
understand and have learned the standard being taught.
Developing Proficiency/Proficiencia en desarrollo 1
The student is working, but has not yet demonstrated they
understand and have learned the standard being taught.

Grades will be given based on proficiency. All assignments will be graded with rubrics based on a 1-4
scale. Students will be able to discuss with the teacher if they would like another opportunity to show
proficiency.
Assignments: Make-up and Late Work:
Assignments will vary in type including: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what
journaling you missed. You can do this by asking a classmate,
daily classwork checking the assignment crate, or contact me after you
discussion and participation have exhausted the other two options. If you know you
projects are going to be absent, speak with me in advance so that
presentations you will be able to keep up with assignments you will be
essays missing.
quizzes Late assignments, make-up work & retakes will be
tests accepted within TWO WEEKS of the assigned
assessment/assignment.

Attendance & Tardy Policy:


Students will be expected to come to class regularly. The two most important things you can do to ensure
passing this class are:
1) Come to class each day
2) Complete and turn in all assignments and tests.

Cheating:
DO NOT CHEAT. Cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating on any exam, quiz or assignment will result in a
0, a disciplinary referral, and parent notification. There will be no opportunity to make this up.

Rules and Expectations:


1. When someone is talking everyone is quiet and listening.
2. Students are responsible for taking notes during lectures and activities.
3. Students will work in small groups in a constructive and respectful manner.
4. Positive participation in class is expected.
5. All work is to be turned in on time.
6. Respect yourself, your teacher and respect each other. Any violations of acceptable behavior will be treated
as described in the Parent/Student Handbook.
7. Absolutely no cell phones are allowed in the classroom (unless permission has been granted by the
teacher. OFF & AWAY. WHS cell phone policy will be enforced.)

We will create a class set of Ground Rules together.

Students or parents with questions or concerns are invited to contact me in their most convenient manner. Email
will receive the most immediate response, within 24 hours.
