The Progression Of Music Videos

Zachary Guerroudj
A documentary on how music videos have become the art form they are
today.
Visuals Narrative
- Insert Several clips of Music Videos havent always been
current music videos as we know them today. It was
-Insert original music videos rare for an artist to produce a
by the Beatles video for a song thats soul
purpose wasnt for promoting.
-Insert clips of music videos Now many music videos are seen
that have won awards- as pieces of art, and awards are
even given to the best of the
-Insert clips of current MTV- best. This progress would have
been nothing without the worlds
-Insert clips of original MTV leading music channel, MTV. It
footage- started out in the 80s with only
a hundred promotional songs in
-Insert clips of old Australian its repertoire. Most of these
and British bands- videos were by washed
up/unrecognised British and
Australian bands. They were
-Insert clips from original MTV- played on a constant live stream
called I want my MTV: The
uncensored story of the music
revolution. After a few years
-Insert stills of different at a stand stop, MTV were forced
record labels from the 80s- to go to big labels and offer to
make these videos for them for
free that would then be aired on
their channel. This really
-Current MTV Clips- helped MTV make a reputable name
for themselves and the MTV we
know today. This led them to
striking a deal on one of the
-Insert clips of Thriller from most iconic music videos to
Michael Jackson date, Michael Jacksons,
Thriller. This meant that it
-Behind the scenes of Michael would be aired on the channel 3-
Jacksons Thriller- 5 times a day. When released,
the world was speechless.
-Clips of it being first aired Something like this had never
on MTV- been done, rather than just
releasing a new song, they
created a short film almost.
Something that the viewers could
watch and appreciate just as
much as the song. Michael
himself saw the work of Quincy
Jones, a renowned producer and
requested for him to help create
the video. He was ideal for this
-Clips of American Werewolf- as he had done something similar
but on a film in England called
American Werewolf In London.
This really helped to make the
vision for the video a reality
due to it being exactly what
-Insert more clips of: Michael wanted from his video
Thriller Video but with a zombie apocalyptic
Behind the scenes vibe. Having over half a million
Close up of Prosthetics pound budget definitely helped.
Michael Jackson himself- This was a substantial amount of
money considering the era. This
shows how much they were willing
to invest to ensure that the
video turned out how they
envisioned. It really enables
them to have as much creative
flow as they wanted without any
limitations, I think thats why
it really set the bar for future
music videos because before
artists and bands wouldnt think
to create a visual piece to
compliments there video, and if
they had it definitely wasnt up
to this standard. The budget
isnt actually that outlandish
considering the amount of behind
the scenes work that was needed.
Prosthetics werent really as
common back in the 80s and if
they were, they werent this
realistic. So to have a video
pretty much centred on it meant
that they needed to invest the
time, money and resources in it
to ensure that it didnt lack
realism. The video itself got
inducted into the National Film
-Insert news coverage clip on Registry of Congress 20 years
this honour- later. An honour that had never
been given to a music video
before.

Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel

was another monumental music
-Insert clips of Sledgehammer by video of its era. It grabbed the
Peter Gabriel- nation by storm, it was covered
by top news stations and was
constantly talked about. It
captured the audience with its
intense and bizarre visuals, and
upbeat editing. When first
released it was aired
exclusively on MTV as this was
- Insert clips of each the best platform for music
technique used - videos in the 80s. They were so
many techniques at use here:
Claymation, pixilation and stop
- Me talking- motion. This shows the amount of
effort and work went into the
video, it does translate on
camera as well because the video
has a vast array of visuals that
wouldnt be possible if these
techniques werent used. There
isnt a disconnect between them
either, they flow from one into
another smoothly. I think Peter
Gabriel took his video to the
next level because he would of
-Insert thriller clip- seen the standard of thriller
and thought that the world would
expect more: Which they did.
Not much has changed over time
with music videos. Theres
always been that want to create
something interesting and visual
to compliment and promote your
song ever since it was really
-Insert clip of old and new introduced. As time went on CGI
music video- became a more popular technique.
It may be expensive and require
a high skill level but it
enables you to create 2D or 3D
effects which arent actually
-Insert clips of CGI in use and there. This meant that producer
how it works- can really push there videos as
far as they want and not have
any limitation. With a high
budget, using techniques like
this isnt an issue. The
-Insert clip of equipment set equipment used in the filming of
up- these videos have drastically
changed as well. In the 80s when
music videos started to blossom,
-Insert clips and stills of a the typical camera to use would
Panavision camera- have been a Panavision. It was
large and at times difficult to
use because of its size. This is
a lot different to the Canon
VIXO HF G30. Almost a third of
-Insert clips and stills of the the size yet 100x clearer
Canon VIXO- quality. It has a 20x HD video
lens (35mm), 1080 frames per
_-Clips of the camera quality- second. The quality of this
camera is cinematic and is often
-Me reading this- used for the high end music
videos. It really helps to set
them aside from the average
productions.
A music video that is dominating
-Insert clips from music video- the scene currently is Despacito
by the artist Luis Fonsi and
features Daddy Yankee. It can be
-Me speaking- viewed on YouTube and has been
3.7 billion times. That make
this the most viewed video on
the planet. The song is in
Spanish and is situated in
-Me reading this- Puerto Ricco. It is full of
cultural visuals and has an
element of authenticity as the
artist dance around with locals.
I think this video picked up
-Insert this scene- such a substantial amount of
views because of the happy and
upbeat feel throughout. The pace
of editing compliments this and
the song as it is fast and jumpy
in places. Theres lots of
different shot types as well
-Insert lots of examples of which keeps it moving and
different shot types- interesting, rather than just
being one shot repeatedly.
Rather than having a clear
narrative, this video is more
-Insert ethnic visuals- centred on the ethnic visuals.
In almost all of the shots you
can see the setting which is
-Me talking- clearly in a small Spanish town
somewhere, this goes hand in
hand with the actual subjects in
the shots. Its often the locals
-Insert clip of dancers- dancing around with the artist,
showing a sense of solidarity
and culture. It also centres
around a women who engages with
-Insert clip- the camera and artist often,
playing on the male gaze. I
think this video gained a lot of
attention because it is on a
platform that can be accessed by
-Insert still of the world- anyone on the globe, all is
needed is an internet
connection. It is also not that
often that a song in a different
language to English makes it to
the top of the charts across the
world. The fact that it is
something different but executed
-More video clips of the video- well most definitely helped to
grasp the listeners and viewers,
also being shared on such a
large and accessible platform
was definitely an advantage.
YouTubes growth has intensified
massively in the past few years
and consequently made it the
platform for sharing videos,
especially music videos.
Henry Schofield is an
-Insert still of Henry- established producer who has
played part in many productions.
-Insert clips that Henry He works for Caviar Productions
Schofield Played a part in and as you can tell from these
producing- clips, the genre of the videos
is pop. His typical genre of
video. The videos dont seem to
have a strong narrative rather
are focused on interesting
-Show the fast pace- visuals. Both have a fast pace
and you almost find yourself
following them through the
video. Some of the many artist
that henry works with include
-Put the artist with- Stome, Will Young and Spygo. My
favourite videos that Henry
Schofield play a part in
producing include New Rules by
-Show these two videos- Dua Lipa and Ela Eyre If I Go.
Im genuinely enticed start to
finish, they dont leave a
moment for you to get
disinterested: its filled with
-Show examples of these fun props, appropriate yet funky
features- mis-en-scene, lots of vibrant
colour and exciting sets. This
is definitely something I want
-Me talking- to achieve in mine. Its clear no
shortcuts were taken either,
everything flows and is
seamless. This is due to
extensive planning and high
budgets that enabled them to get
exactly what they want from the
-Show more videos and behind the video, even if it means the set
scenes- is a rotating room. The
production company that Henry
works for isnt generic. Looking
at their content, it tends to be
quite unusual and extravagant,
helping to keep it interesting
and moving with the times as
people expect more and more.

Clearances and Confirmations
Below is an email to my teacher getting permission to film in the studio. There is also
a n equipment booking form that confirms I can use the schools filming equipment.
Contingency Plan
If I cant use the studio for any reason, I will either postpone filming/recording
or use an alternative location. There are other studios situated at the college
but arent for media. It would be fine to film in there with some warning to an
appropriate teacher.

If the equipment doesnt work or Im suddenly not allowed to use it I will bring
my own in my home. I dont have a mic or tripod so if I cant use those I will
have to borrow one of a fellow classmate.
