A certain flow given by u y 5 ,v x 2 , 0 has a temperature field given byT y t 2 x .

a) Calculate the local time-rate-of-change of T at (1,2), and also the material derivative of T at (1,2) at
1 any time t. Discuss the differences.
b) Repeat the calculation for T ( y 6 2x 3 )t .
c) From this last result, what conclusion can you draw?
A tornado may be simulated as two-part circulating flow in cylindrical coordinates, with v r v z 0 and

Determine the vorticity and the strain rates in each part of the flow.
Assume that a transient, two-dimensional flow has velocity components given by
x y
u , v , w 0
1 at 1 bt
Where a and b are constant. The object of this problem is to compare and contrast the streamline in this
flow with the paths of the fluid particles.
a) Find the equations governing the streamline that passes through the point (1,1) at time t. Note that
3 the other points included on this streamline change with time.
b) Calculate the path of a particle that starts at r0 (x 0 , y 0 ) (1,1) at t 0 . Determine the location of
particle r at (t 1) , denoted as r (1) .
c) Use the results of part (a) to determine the condition under which the Streamlines and particle paths
coincide.
d) Determine the streakline of tracer particles released from r0 (1,1) between t 0 and t 1 .
The velocity field corresponding to the steady, two-dimensional, constant-density flow over a particular body
is given by

V (x 2 y 2 )i (2xy ) j
a) Confirm that this flow is incompressible and find its streamfunction.
b) Determine the equation for a streamline passing through the point.
c) Determine the vorticity vector. Is the flow irrotational?
d) Find the corresponding potential function (x , y ) if exists.
e) Determine the components of the strain rate tensor ij and identify the normal and shear strain
4 rates. Notice that the sum of the three normal strain rates zero at every point in this flow field. Why
must this be true?
f) If the fluid can be considered Newtonian and isotropic with dynamic viscosity , determine the
components of the stress tensor ij .
g) Determine the acceleration of fluid particles.
h) Determine whether this flow is an exact solution for constant , and, if so, find the pressure
distribution p (x , y ) .
i) Calculate the viscous dissipation term for this flowfield.
j) Any conclusion from this problem?
