Interview a Teacher
The teacher I chose to interview was Mr. Eugene Agor. He is 36 years old, a graduate of
AB English at University of Nueva Caceres. Hes been teaching for almost 12 years and
currently he is the instructor of Special Program in the Arts Creative Writing Cluster and
teaching Grade 8 and 9 students.

(After a brief introduction of myself and the purpose of this interview, I ask the first question on
my list.)

Edcel: Sir, why did you go into teaching?

Sir Eugene: uhm I chose to be a teacher probably because uhmm the influence of the people
around me, probably my mother and my eldest sister, uhm but then what really happen is that it
was not my intention to become a teacher but eventually I landed in this job and I really love this
particular work because it really gives fulfillment in my life.

Edcel: What has been the rewarding experience for your career this far?

Sir Eugene: ah the rewarding experience will uhm be molding students or shaping them with
those important ideals they need to learn not only academic aspects but also the values that they
need to in vibe in them and eventually they will be able to carry them in the future perhaps when
they are already in their respective working fields also and then another thing that is rewarding
on my part is seeing my students compete and learning from that experience that is one of those
things that uhm I will not be able to experience if I will be perhaps in other types of work.

Edcel: Okay sir, what would you recommend to me considering teaching as a career?

Sir Eugene: I think the best thing that you need to learn if you want to be a teacher is to uhm
embrace the profession and you really need to give so much patience in this work because its
not easy to deal with learners specially in the modern days, you need to be patient enough in
order to understand them and to know when is the right time to reprimand them or to tell them
about the things they are not really doing well, so that they will not be offended or they will be
able to absorb the thing you are telling too.

Edcel: So sir, what can you say about the new curriculum?

Sir Eugene: The new curriculum to be honest is not really that refine as of this moment because
there are certain aspects which are to be uhm given attention. Example in our case in the grade 8
until now we dont have the book yet to give to our learners. In that case how can we give a very
high rate or score in Grades 11 to 12 if the Junior High itself is not yet refined. Another thing in
the grade 11 and 12 there are still things that perhaps the teachers even the department itself
should look in to. Well its not yet perhaps that mature or timely for me to give that very low rate
because its still in progress probably 3 to 5 years from now we can say if the program is really
worth it or something that must be done in order to improve it, thats it.
Edcel: How often you give assessment or performance task?

Sir Eugene: uhm I give 2 to 3 assessment or performance task every quarter thats what I do in
my case in English Im not sure with the other subject. Thats the major performance task or
product.

Edcel: okay sir, last question po sir. Uhm which do you prefer the traditional or the modern
assessment or performance based?

Sir Eugene: I prefer this one, the modern because the rubrics are provided, even if they are not
provided we are already given the perhaps the time to adjust to how, I mean on how we are going
to assess the performance of the students, and somehow the performance task are really anchored
on what the students will experience or will do in the future if not exactly the way they will do
that at least they have the essential things they will learn after doing the task.

Edcel: Thank you po sir.

Reflection:

In learning you will teach, and in teaching you will learn said by Phil Collins. Teaching is

not just giving information, it is how to inspire and push the learners to go out of their comfort

zone. It is about touching their hearts and change the way they see the world in a knowledgeable

way.

After my interview, I realized that teaching is not just a profession it is a passion. It may

be too exhausting but then when you and your student learned from each other, youll find

fulfillment. According to him, there are many circumstances that will come when Im in the

teaching profession; his advice is that I should be patient enough for me to handle the class and

the learners. Teaching materials are not a barrier for us future teachers not to teach the learners,

we should have an alternative way to teach and not to be dependent on the materials itself.

I realized also that the transition of the new curriculum is not easy for the traditional

teachers, so Mr. Eugene said that we millennial teachers are very lucky because in the learning

process we do have an advantage to teach. Also he said that a teacher must be versatile enough to

cope on the new age of teaching.

Versatility and passion are one of the important traits of the new era of teachers, because

of the high spread of technology, we teachers should know to facilitate and not to be dependent

on the materials given.
