Educational Philosophy

Education is changing. On the horizon sails a new age. One that brings with it adapted

classrooms and new-age technology. One that uses ingenuity and creativity as its winds and

sails on waters of positivity. A ship that brings a new hope for future generations.

Classrooms are like vessels; the teacher is the captain and his/her students are the

crew. Without the captain there is no direction; there is no leadership. But without the crew,

there is no one to make the ship run smoothly. Behind every encouraging captain, there is a

crew that leans on each other. Behind every positive captain, there is a crew that strives to be

better. As a teacher, I plan to thrive off positivity. I plan to teach with passion and stick with my

students through their trials and the successes. But above all of that, I plan to challenge every

student to be a better person.

These fundamental themes of education can be instilled through certain strategies used

in my classroom. Strategies such as building rapport with students will allow me to make

students feel wanted and respected. By taking time to develop individual relationships, I will

create an environment that will be judgment free and allow all students to express their opinions

and thoughts. This will also allow for an active learning environment, where students are put in

the drivers seat. Another strategy to create such an environment is to have student lead

classrooms. This will not only help students feel ownership over their education, but will also

allow me to know what specific areas my students are interested in. With a subject such as

English, I will have more room in my curriculum to adapt and change texts that are geared more

toward my students. Ultimately, I will be the mediator and provide students with the necessary

skill-set needed in order to prepare for their futures.

With student lead classrooms comes the potential for behavioral issues. I will do my

best to make sure there are steps in place for students who are having a difficult time staying on

task and/or acting out. One way to help with behavioral management is to have activities right

off the bat. I plan to begin each class period with a prompt on the board or daily writing activity.

By having a Bell-Ringer, I will not only cut out disruption time but will also provide myself with a

chance to formatively assess my students and see the areas that may be a concern. This will

also help in keeping an organized classroom. Students will feel more comfortable and

consequently, it will create a predictable classroom- where students will feel safe and open.

Another method I will use to help manage my classroom more effectively, will be: to have clear

and direct rules/procedures that are posted in an easily visible area. This will provide students

with clear instructions and avoid any confusion as to what is appropriate during class.

At the end of it all, I need an appropriate way to evaluate my students performance

properly. One successful method for assessing the work of students is to have adequate

rubrics that clearly outlines the requirements of the given assignment. By providing students

with a rubric, I will have clear and concise expectations for my students to follow. One other

effective way to assess students work is to have routine exit slips or bell work over course

material (as mentioned prior with Bell-Ringer activities) as well as group work. However,

formative assessment only stretches so far. Summative assessment in an English class can

have some blurred lines (more subjectivity than perhaps other content areas); as someone who

values projects and application tasks, summative assignments are the real meat of any class.

That being said, I firmly believe in the opportunity for students to have contributions to the

assignments as a whole. By offering multiple forms (alternatives) of the same assignment, I will

encourage students to not only want to do the work, but find passion in doing so. This also
allows students to feel like they own their education, which is one of the most empowering

feelings as a student.

The purpose of education is to provide students with a skillset they can use and refine

over time to help better themselves for the world ahead. I wholeheartedly see the education

system as a potential breeding ground for ingenuity and creation, students just need to be

provided the opportunity. In order to achieve this task, I must be up to the challenge and come

prepared every day with a passion for my subject and a beaming smile that is contagious for all.

If a crew is only as good as their captain, then students are only as good as their

teacher. And I plan on using my strengths (passion and positivity) to mold my students into well

equipped agents of the world.
