Pädasevanam

Serving the Lotus Feet of Lord Kåñëa

By their very nature the living entities are meant to serve Lord Kåñëa,
the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In this lies their real happiness
and welfare. When this service is without any desire for personal
gratification it is called pure devotional service. Thus the goal of pure
devotional service is to please Kåñëa and nothing else. There are nine
processes of devotional service which are recommended by spiritual
authorities: 1) hearing about the transcendental holy name, form,
qualities, paraphernalia and pastimes of Lord Viñëu 2) chanting about
the glories of the Lord and His pastimes 3)remembering them 4)
serving the lotus feet of the Lord 5) offering the Lord respectful
worship with sixteen types of paraphernalia 6) offering prayers to the
Lord 7) becoming His servant 8) considering the Lord one's best friend
and 9) surrendering everything unto Him.

Pädasevanam, rendering menial service, is thus the fourth limb of


bhakti out of the nine limbs or processes. Mother Lakñmé, the eternal
consort of Lord Näräyana is the embodiment of perfection in devotional
service through pädasevanam.

Çréla Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura explains that the word


çravaëam refers to giving aural reception to the holy name and
descriptions of the Lord's form, qualities, entourage and pastimes as
explained in Çrémad-Bhägavatam, Bhagavad-gétä and similar
authorized scriptures. After hearing such messages, one should
memorize these vibrations and repeat them (kértanam). Smaraëam
means trying to understand more and more about the Supreme Lord
by trying to constantly remember Him, and päda-sevanam means
engaging oneself in serving the lotus feet of the Lord according to the
time and circumstances. Arcanam means worshiping Lord Viñëu as one
does in the temple, and vandanam means offering respectful
obeisances. Man-manä bhava mad-bhakto mad-yäjé mäà namaskuru
(Bhagavad-gétä 18.65). Vandanam means namaskuru—offering
obeisances or offering prayers. Thinking oneself to be nitya-kåñëa-
däsa, everlastingly a servant of Kåñëa, is called däsyam, and sakhyam
means being a well-wisher of Kåñëa. Kåñëa wants everyone to
surrender unto Him because everyone is constitutionally His servant.
Ätma-nivedanam means offering Kåñëa everything, including one's
body, mind, intelligence and whatever one may possess.
One's sincere endeavor to perform these nine processes of devotional
service is technically called bhakti.

There have been many great souls who achieved perfection in
devotional service through practice of each of these nine processes:
Parékñit Mahäräja attained perfection simply by hearing (çravaëam),
and Çukadeva Gosvämé attained perfection simply by chanting
(kértanam). Prahläda Mahäräja attained perfection by remembering
the Lord (Smaraëam). The goddess of fortune, Lakñmédevé, attained
perfection by worshiping the Lord's lotus feet (päda-sevanam). Påthu
Mahäräja attained perfection by worshiping the Deity of the Lord
(arcanam). Akrüra attained perfection by offering prayers (vandanam),
Hanumän by rendering service, Arjuna by establishing friendship with
the Lord, and Bali Mahäräja by offering everything to the service of the
Lord (ätma-nivedanam).

Pädasevanam has to be executed with the assistance of the other


limbs: çravaëam (hearing about the glories of the Lord Kåñëa),
kértanam (glorifying the Lord and His pastimes, and smaraëam
(remembering the Lord). It is imperative to realize that we, conditioned
souls do not have the qualities to serve the Supreme Lord. At the same
time, one has to be aware of the fact that the supreme object of
service is the full embodiment of eternity, absolute knowledge and
unlimited bliss. Çréla Rüpa Gosvämé described this topic in detail when
he enunciated the sixty-four limbs of bhakti in his treatise upon bhakti
named the Bhakti-rasämåta-sindhu. Pädasevanam includes darçana,
seeing the transcendental form of the Lord; touching the body of the
Deity; circumambulation of the Deity, the temple and the dhäma, etc;
daily performance of one’s devotional duties; and visiting the temple of
the Lord, the holy rivers such as the Gaìgä and the sacred pilgrimage
places like Puré, Dvärakä, Mathurä and Navadvépa. The worship of
Tulasé devé and the service of the sädhus also belong to pädasevanam
as well.

Quotes on Pädasevanam

1. In the Brahma-saàhitä it is stated that Ganapati worships the lotus


feet of Lord Nåsiàhadeva and in that way has become auspicious for
the devotees in clearing out all impediments.

2. Anyone who has taken shelter of the lotus feet of Mukunda, the
giver of liberation, giving up all kinds of obligation, and has taken to
the path in all seriousness, owes neither duties nor obligations to the

demigods, sages, general living entities, family members, humankind
or forefathers.

3. For one who has accepted the boat of the lotus feet of the Lord, who
is the shelter of the cosmic manifestation and is famous as Mukunda,
or the giver of mukti, the ocean of the material world is like the water
contained in a calf’s footprint. paraà padam, or the place where there
are no material miseries, or Vaikuëöha, is his goal, not the place where
there is danger in every step of life.

4. Just try to worship, in devotional service, Väsudeva, the Supreme


Personality of Godhead. Even great sages are not able to control the
forces of the senses as effectively as those who are engaged in
transcendental bliss by serving the lotus feet of the Lord, uprooting the
deep-grown desire for fruitive activities.

5. The (1) grossly foolish persons, (2) the lowest of mankind, (3) the
deluded speculators, and (4) the professed atheists, as above
mentioned, never surrender unto the lotus feet of the Personality of
Godhead in spite of all scriptural and authoritative advice. (Çrémad

6. My Lord, if one is favored by even a slight trace of the mercy of Your


lotus feet, he can understand the greatness of Your personality. But
those who speculate to understand the Supreme Personality of
Godhead are unable to know You, even though they continue to study
the Vedas for many years.

7. Simply by tasting the tulasé leaves offered to the lotus feet of the

13. Those great sages who have completely taken shelter of the lotus
feet of the Lord can at once sanctify those who come in touch with
them, whereas the waters of the Ganges can sanctify only after

of the pure devotees. The pure devotees whose only business is

34. A pure devotee of the Lord whose heart has once been cleansed by
the process of devotional service never relinquishes the lotus feet of

35. A person who does not move from the lotus feet of the Lord even
for a moment or a second is to be considered the greatest of all

has taken absolute shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord, who gives us
salvation and who alone is fit to be taken shelter of, is no longer a

44. Because of the fragrance of His lotus feet, carried by the air and
mixed with the aroma of tulasé, their [the four kumäras’]minds

mundane nescience. Only persons deprived of their intelligence by the

that You bestow mercy even upon them.

49. Persons who have given up stereotyped worldly affairs and the
beastly followers of these affairs, and who have taken shelter of the
umbrella of Your lotus feet by drinking the intoxicating nectar of Your

from the primary necessities of the material body.

50. Unless one is fortunate enough to have the dust of the lotus feet of
a mahätmä on one’s head, there is no possibility of perfection in
spiritual life.

55. A pure devotee, who is attached to the activities of devotional


service and who always engages in the service of My lotus feet, never
desires to become one with Me.

56. Because non-devotees neglect the transcendental loving service of


the lotus feet of the Personality of Godhead, their intelligence is not
sufficient, and therefore these persons fall down.

57. The real purpose of controlling the mind by the prescribed method
of clearing the passage of the life air is achieved immediately if one
fixes his mind directly on the lotus feet of Kåñëa.

mind becomes an enemy, and if we concentrate our mind on the lotus

of sin stored in the mind of the meditating devotee. One should

60. Meditating on the lotus feet of the Lord acts like a thunderbolt on
the mountain of dirt in the mind of the yogé. If a yogé wants to shatter
the mountain of dirt in his mind, he should concentrate on the lotus
feet of the Lord and not imagine something void or impersonal.

61. One has to think of the lotus feet of the Lord. The Mäyävädés
imagine that one can think of the lotus feet of Lord Çiva or Lord
Brahmä or the goddess Durgä to achieve liberation, but this is not so.
Bhagavataù means “of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viñëu,”
and no one else.

62. By his constitutional position, Lord Çiva is always great and


auspicious, but since he has accepted on his head the Ganges water,
which emanated from the lotus feet of the Lord, he has become even
more auspicious and important.

63. One who has attained the stage of bhäva can accept the lotus feet
of Lord Kåñëa as worshipable.

64. By taking shelter under the lotus feet of Kåñëa, one is endowed
with both kinds of prosperity, material and spiritual. Why then should
one go to any demigod?

65. The Supreme Lord is described as mahat-pada, which means that


the total material energy, known as the mahat-tattva, is lying at His
lotus feet.

66. Since all the great sages and devotees apply all energy and all
activities in the service of the lotus feet of the Lord, there must be
some transcendental pleasure in the toes of His lotus feet. The Lord

67. The dust of the lotus feet of great personalities offers all good to
the recipient, but the same dust can also do harm. Those who are

68. There is such transcendental bliss in simply meditating on the lotus
feet of the Lord that one can forget everything but the Lord’s
transcendental form. This is the perfection of yogic samädhi, or
ecstasy.

69. The rules and regulations of devotional service are based on this
principle: anything in touch with the lotus feet of the Lord is
immediately freed from all material contamination.

70. Tértha means “sanctified place”. The Lord’s lotus feet are called
tértha-päda because under their protection there are hundreds and
thousands of saintly persons who sanctify the sacred places of
pilgrimage.

71. Undoubtedly it is troublesome to go from one holy place to


another, but one who is intelligent can take shelter of the lotus feet of
Govinda and thereby be automatically sanctified as the result of his

72. A pure devotee, who has implicit faith in the lotus feet of the Lord,
can create sacred places in any part of the world where he decides to

73. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is so great that simply by


worshiping His lotus feet, your great-grandfather, Lord Brahmä,
acquired the necessary qualifications to create this universe.

74. The Lord is sometimes described as çiva-viriïci-nutam [Çrémad


Bhägavatam 11.5.33], which means that Lord Çiva and Lord Brahmä

Supreme Personality of Godhead, Näräyaëa.

75. Any person who desires the fruits of the four principles religiosity,
economic development, sense gratification and, at the end, liberation,
should engage himself in the devotional service of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, for worship of His lotus feet yields the
fulfillment of all of these.

76. The real path of religion is to surrender at the lotus feet of the
Lord.

77. The devotee’s love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead is so


intense that he wants to kiss the lotus feet of the Lord constantly, and
he wants to touch the tips of the toes of the Lord and constantly

78. An offense at the lotus feet of a Vaiñëava is the greatest offense in


this world. When one serves a Vaiñëava unknowingly, one still gets the
good result, and if one unknowingly insults a Vaiñëava, one suffers the

79. To endeavor to be situated in the shade of the lotus feet of the


Lord is not an ordinary task because even the great brahmacärés
headed by Sanandana, who practiced añöäìga-yoga in trance, attained

80. A devotee is always engaged in drinking the honey from the lotus
feet of the Lord. Unless one is freed from all material desires, he
cannot actually taste the honey from the Lord’s lotus feet.

81. Only one who is completely surrendered at the lotus feet of the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, depending fully on Him for personal
maintenance or even for maintenance of his family, can attain

82. If one offers oblations with faith and devotion—either to the lotus
feet of Lord Viñëu or to His representative in Pitåloka, Aryamä—one’s
forefathers will attain material bodies to enjoy whatever material

83. One should accept the instructions of the Supreme Personality of


Godhead by bowing down at the lotus feet of the Lord. This means that
anything spoken by the Personality of Godhead should be taken as it

84. A pure devotee always engages in the service of the Lord, taking
shelter of His lotus feet, and therefore he has a direct connection with
the saffron mercy-particles that are strewn over the lotus feet of the

85. After self-realization, the material wisdom of the jïäné leads him to
the shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord. Then he is satisfied only in

of Godhead, suffering humanity can immediately cleanse the dirt which

191. When the living entity, after many, many births in different forms,
returns to his original form of Kåñëa consciousness, he immediately
