Introduction to Islamic Theology & Law

We can, for example, look at the estate left by al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, of the

tribe of Quraysh, a man of such piety that he is considered one of the ten people to whom

the Prophet could grant during their lifetime the happy assurance that their serving to

Islam would guarantee their entrance into Paradise. The Prophet called him His apostle

(Hawari). This Zubayr left landed property that after payment of all debts brought a net

price variously estimated in the reports between 35,200,000 and 52,000,000 dirhams. He

was, to be sure, celebrated for his generous works of charity, but he certainly was a

Croesus, and no contempt for his world is reflected in the inventory of the real estate he

could call his own in various parts of the recently conquered lands: eleven houses in

Medina alone, and other in Basra, Kufa, Fustat and Alexandria.
