World War II Causes of World War II

Goals & Objectives

Students will be able to understand and explain disciplinary specific vocabulary and create
a connection to their personal lives. They will also be able to analyze the text and break
down the information concisely, applying the information to what they already know, what
they want to know, and what they learned. They will also be able to think critically about
new concepts and categorize them into distinct parts. This will allow students to learn
more about the causes of WWII.

California State Content Standards

HSS 10.8 Students analyze the causes and consequences of World War II.

Common Core Literacy Standards

CCSS.ELA.Literacy.RH.9-10.3: Analyze in detail a series of events described in a text;
determine whether earlier events caused later ones or simply preceded them.

ELD Standard
ELD.9-10.I.B.6a.Emerging: Explain ideas, phenomena, processes, and text relationships
(e.g., compare/contrast, cause/effect, evidence-based argument) based on close reading of
a variety of grade-appropriate texts, presented in various print and multi-media formats,
using short sentences and a select set of general academic and domain-specific words.

Lesson Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Hook/Accessing Prior Knowledge) Time: 10 min

At the beginning of class, I will have students do a quick-write to activate prior knowledge.
These will include questions such as, What do you know about World War II? How does this
relate to yourself? Any number of questions that would either activate prior knowledge or
connect an idea to their own individual experiences. We will then quickly share a few.

Vocabulary (Content Language Development) Time: 20 minutes

We will be actively reading through the textbook today to break down and decipher the
main concepts. There will be a list of vocabulary written on the board that students will
have to copy. We will work through those one by one and I will ask questions that connect
to students individual experiences, and think about the definition together. For instance,
Are you a confrontational person? Or do you like to keep the peace in the family? Is there
someone in your family that always likes to let things go and wont say anything in order to
preserve the peace? and slowly work our way up to the term appeasement etc. There will
be around 10 words that we will go over for now.

Content Delivery (Direct Instruction) Time: 20 minutes

We will be using a K-W-L Plus graphic organizer to help us go through the first few sections
of the textbook. Now that they have a better understanding of certain vocabulary words,
we will proceed on reading through. Students will be able to use this and work their way
through the text. Students will have already thought about what they know in the topic
with the quick write and will be asked to copy them into concise bullet points and be given
a few minutes to discuss what they know with a partner. They will be asked to come up
with things they want to know, either by themselves or with a partner. Afterwards,
students will read through a section individually. Each time a student comes upon
information that is confirmed by the author, they will put a check mark next to it, and cross
out ones that are contradicted by the author. Students will also jot down answers of things
they wanted to know in the L column. Students will note where they found that information
in the text. There will be a fourth column that is titled new learning where students write
down things they thought were important during the reading but did not appear in either
the K or L columns.

Student Engagement (Critical Thinking & Student Activities) Time: 8 minutes

Students will only be able to start this activity, but we will continue tomorrow. Students
will start creating a concept map that brings together all the information under each
category, while working in pairs again with their previous partner. This will allow students
to determine their own categories and connect the bigger concepts in the chapter.

Lesson Closure Time: 3 minutes

Students will be told to pack up and reminded of anything important. Let them know we
will continue the activity tomorrow and if you have not finished reading through the text,
to do so at home.

Assessments (Formative & Summative)

Formative: Question and answer (open ended questions meant to have students think), the
KWL Plus chart when finished, and the vocabulary and definite they write down

Accommodations for English Learners, Striving Readers and Students with Special Needs
Students will be able to access all content delivery material earlier should they choose to,
with vocabulary they can study. Students will also be paired with peers that can help them
in their readings.
