Assignment # 1

1.) Discuss the difference between peer competition and positive interdependence in a group.
Simply said, arent there debates in group work?
= Peer competition is a social group composed of individual wherein each student competes
with one another. On the other hand, positive interdependence is an element of cooperative
and collaborative learning where members of a group who share common goals perceive that
working together is individually and collectively beneficial and success depends on the
participation of all the members. They must defend their individual learning or principal so they
undergo debate to ones group
2.) What can be done in case some members of the group do not show positive interpersonal and
communication skills? Can the teacher help in this situation?
=In this kind of scenario, there should be an action from the teacher. It is because an effective
teacher is caring and is able to know their students to create relationships that enhance the
learning process. In a group, if some of the members dont know positive interpersonal and
communication skills, the teacher should be able to have the passion, humor, values, attitude,
patience, enthusiasm and commitment. In that way the students must be responsible to their
group. In addition, the teacher must encourage the students to be active.
3.) Are skills in listening, negotiating, compromising, punctuality, tolerance (giving others a chance
to speak) part of the social skills needed in group work?
=With the abovementioned concern, it is indeed part of part of social skills in a group work. It is
how students learn if they are not going to cooperate in the group. Cooperation or collaborative
is needed in a group work to gained effective learning. In which evaluation is a cooperative
process with emphasis on self-evaluation. In which students are encourage to trust in
themselves as well as in external sources. In this way students feel they are accepted in the
group. And encourages openness of self rather than conceal of self.
4.) Hoe can group members ensure that each member of the group is also accountable for the
group work and not totally dependent on others? In practical terms, how can the teacher grade
individual students fairly in a group activity for one single output?
=The group members can ensure that the students or members of the group dont totally
dependent on others by letting them to have chance to speak in front of the group members. In
practical terms, the teacher grade individual by letting the student to stand in front and have
the chance to speak. Being a teacher, we will use the silent type method when the groups of my
students formed a circle and we will facilitate.
5.) While cooperative learning is a very good avenue for teachers to help students learn effectively,
why is it not to be adopted in all classrooms learning situation?
= Cooperative leaning it is not to be adopted in all classrooms learning situations since not all
classroom learning situations are needed in cooperative learning. For example, the individual
activities, projects, assignment and others. One of the richest resources for learning is the
learner himself. Each individual has an accumulation of experiences, ideas, feelings and
attitudes which comprises a rich vein of material for problem solving and learning.
