INTRODUCTION

We are given 5 senses to use in our daily lives. We use our eyes to see, our noses to smell,
our tongue to taste, our ears to hear, and our skin to feel. These senses contribute to the way we
are able to collect information and store memories. According to the theory of Information
Processing by Miller, it is said that information is gathered by the senses, stored in the brain, and
finally brings about a behavioral response or output. As students, we often see study tips on how
to retain information better, and that is with the use of our senses. I find these fun tips very
believable because with the philosophical theory of David Hume, the A Treatise of Human Nature,
it is stated that all of our knowledge is based on our experiences. As a student, I want to see and
test how these senses are able to improve our performance as students with memory retention and
information processing. What sense is the most effective for memory retention and information
process? It is one of the five (5) sense? Two (2) of them? Or maybe all of them combined? With
this research, we will be able to discover better study habits that will benefit us.

II. THESIS STATEMENT/RESEARCH QUESTION

Thesis Statement: Your senses affect the way you store information and memory, and process
information: You could be a better student

Research Questions that the author intends to answer in the paper are:
1. Can the use of the five (5) senses affect the way you store information, memory, and
process information?
2. Which of these senses are able to affect information and memory storage, and information
processing alone, in the greatest magnitude?
3. Can the combination of these senses greater affect information and memory storage, and
information processing?

III. METHODOLOGY

The study requires gathering relevant data form specified documents like journal articles,
existing researches, and scientific and philosophical theories that carries the keywords senses,
memory retention, information processing, knowledge, and study habits. The study will also be
based around the A Treatise of Human Nature by David Hume and Information Processing theory
by George Miller. The researcher will also will also compare these theories and use the gathered
information to see the similarity and differences between these theories. The researcher will also
devise then test study methods that will make use of the five senses in a way that will improve
information and memory retention, and information processing and that will also be connected to
the theories mentioned above. The collected data then will be compiled and analyzed by the
researcher to be able to achieve a wider understanding of how the process of information retention
occurs, how it correlates with the theories. The researchers will then answer the research questions
and arrive with a conclusion about the chosen topic. The conclusion and gathered information will
then be used and to disseminate to student on how to improve studying and may be used as a basis
to bigger and deeper researches about the senses and how it affects information retention and
processing.
