1 Origination of this Service Information

With 4-line displays the following problems may occur:

symbols may be disarranged
the display may become completely dark, be it the device is overheated or be it the
ambient temperature is too high.
Section 2 shows a list of the devices affected which are provided with a CPU board
CCPU2.
To avoid this problem, 3 capacitors have to be removed from the printed circuit board of
the display in the front panel (see Section 5).

2 Devices Affected

The following devices are concerned:

Distance Protection 7SA610
Distance Protection 7SA611
Distance Protection 7SA612
Differential Protection 7SD610

3 Importend Notes

Warning!
Hazardous voltages are present in this electrical equipment during operation.
Non-observance of the safety rules can result in severe personal injury or prop-
erty damage.
Only qualified personnel shall work on and around this equipment after becom-
ing thoroughly familiar with all warnings and safety notices of this service informa-
tion as well as with the applicable safety regulations.
Particular attention must be drawn to the following:
The earthing screw of the device must be connected solidly to the protective
earth conductor before any other electrical connection is made.
Hazardous voltages can be present on all circuits and components connected
to the supply voltage or to the measuring and test quantities.
Hazardous voltages can be present in the device even after disconnection of
the supply voltage (storage capacitors!).
After removing voltage from the power supply, wait a minimum of 10 seconds
before re-energizing the power supply. This wait allows the initial conditions to
be firmly established befor the device is re-energized.
The limit values stated in the Technical data must not be exceeded at all, not
even during testing and commissioning.

4 Disassembling the Front Panel

To remove the capacitors, the front panel must be taken of the device. Please proceed
as follows.
Prepare area of work. The following equipment is needed:
Screwdriver with a 5 to 6 mm or 1/4 inch tip,
A fine soldering iron with a bent bit suited for soldering SMD-type components, 25 W,
Soldering tin and desoldering wick.
Isolate the power supply by opening the protective switches (test switches, fuses, or
miniature circuit breakers) for both terminals.

Caution!
Electrostatic discharges through the connections of the components,
wiring, and connectors must be avoided! Wearing a grounded wrist strap
is preferred; otherwise, first touch a grounded metal part. Do not insert
or remove interface connectors under live conditions!

Remove the corner covers on the front panel and loosen the 4 screws that are holding
the front panel to the device case.
Carefully pull off and set aside the front panel.
Disconnect the ribbon cable, that links the front panel and the CPU board, at the side
of the front panel. To disconnect the cable, push up on the top latch of the plug con-
nector and push down on the bottom latch of the plug connector. Now the front panel
is detached of the device and the printing circuit board of the display is accessible.

5 Removing the Capacitors

The following capacitors must be removed: C20, C21, C22.

The arrangement of the capacitors is shown in the Figure below.

To unsolder the capacitors proceed as follows:

The two soldering joints of the capacitor must be heated at the same time. Then hold
the bent soldering iron in parallel to the capacitor and put abundant soldering tin onto
both soldering joints (soldering temperature approx. 380 C).
Take off the capacitor from the soldering joints with the soldering iron.
With the desoldering wick remove the soldering tin from the tin joints.

6 Assembling the Front Panel

To assemble the front panel proceed as follows:

Insert the plug connector of the ribbon cable between the CPU board and the front
panel into the socket of the front panel. Be especially careful not to bend any of the
connector pins! Do not use force! Be sure the plug connectors latch.
Replace the front panel and secure to the device case with the screws.
Replace the covers.
Close the protective switches to apply voltage to the power supply.
