Activity cycle
Activity Cycle Diagram (ACD) is a model of the different logical relationships among the
activities. The ACD is implemented easily with the scan of activities of simulation execution.

ACD are the general way of representing the activity model of the discrete event simulation.
These are specifically effective for the difficulties with strong queuing structure. The utility of
ACD is not restricted to the queuing systems and logical structure of the system creates the
natural preferences of Activity Cycle Diagram for the purpose of model specification, whilst the
other actual systems can be shown by activity cycle diagram representation that may become
complex for some systems.

ACD of the base scenario:

Poisson Registrati
Registration
Arrival on queue
process

Outpatient
department

Checking
Release Checking queue

Inpatient
department

Simulation diagram of base scenario:

Running of the model for a period of 1 week:

After running the simulation model, a result can be found. Here, 0 means this is dead state and 1
denotes it is active state. 122 patients arrive in the hospital for treatment. There are 3 patients
who are in checking queue.

Graphical representation of inpatient department result us shown here.

The number of patients treated every week and the waiting time of each
patient

Here, the number of patients treated every week is 114 patients. Average waiting time of each
patient for checking is 46.43 minutes.

Average waiting time of each patient for registration is 3.91 minutes. They wait in registration
queue in maximum 50.77 minutes.

Simulation diagram of base scenario with change of resources:

analysis:
When there are three shifts and in each shift there are two admission secretaries, four nurses, ten
doctors and the number of bed in inpatient department increases to six, the simulation model
changes to the above diagram. The number of patients arriving increases to 155. There are 36
patients who wait for the checking. 116 patients are treated every week. All resources are entered
in the resource segment of activity properties.

When resources are increased, the number of patients arriving to hospital also increases. Thats
why, the average wait time for registration increases to 8 minutes 7 seconds. And maximum wait
time is 59.74 minutes.

Intensive
treatment

There are four dead states in the diagram and others are active state. Here, intensive care
treatment activity state is added.

When resources of intensive care unit are increased:

Analysis:

In the above scenario, the number of specialized doctors and intensive care bed is increased. As
all these changes are made at the same time, there is no change in the simulation model actually.
Every week, 115patients are treated. 36 patients are in the checking queue and their waiting time
decreased little more for increasing the resources in intensive care unit.
