PROPOSAL FOR FINAL EXAM PROJECT

A PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: Using Steam Distillation to Extract Essential Oils Used
In Making Commercial Toilet Deodorizer

Objective

This project aims to extract essential oils from plants using steam distillation and to use these oils
as fragrance in making commercial toilet deodorizer.

Scope

The steam distillation process is limited to using an improvised equipment. Plants to be used are
those that are available and are easily accessible in the Philippine setting. The final product is
going to be a solid that undergoes sublimation to serve its purpose.

Rationale

The use of essential oils as fragrance will make the final product more competitive as it is very
concentrated. A little amount of oil would produce more products compared to artificial
fragrances sold in the market. Furthermore, the freedom to choose any plant to extract and to
customize fragrances will give the consumers a wide variety of scents to choose from.

Execution Strategy

Steam distillation equipment will be set up first. Plant parts will be collected and steam distillation
will be executed to extract the essential oils and then kept for later use. Paradichlorobenzene
chunks will then be boiled until it has a liquid consistency. Essential oils will then be added. The
hot liquid solution will then be put into a shaped container and then allowed to solidify.

Expected Results

The final product must be a commercial toilet deodorizer with a cellophane packaging.
Different scents at varying degree of fragrance will be available to cater the sensitivity of the
consumers to certain scents.
