ASSIGNMENT 01 (SURVEYING-I) 1ST SEMESTER 2014

CHAIN (PROBLEM SHEET)

Problem 1:
A line was measured with the help of a Gunter's chain
and was found to be 8.65 chains. The error in the
chain at start and end of the line was +0.4 and +1.0
links respectively, find the true length of the line?

Problem 2:
A line was measured with the help of an Engineers
chain which was cent percent correct at the start and
found to be 1580 ft. But when it was tested at the end
it was 6 inches too long. What is the true length of
the line?

Problem 3:
A line was measured with the help of an Engineer's
chain and was found to be 1780-ft. The actual length
of the line was 1775 ft. What is error in the
Engineers chain?

Problem 4:
A line was measured with the help of an Engineer chain
and it was found to be 2500-ft. The same line was
measured with a Gunter's chain which was 0.5 links too
short was found to be 3770 links. Find the error in
Engineer's chain?

Problem 5:
A line was measured with an Engineer's chain which was
correct at the start. After the measurement of 2000-
ft, error in the chain was +3.0 inches. Sue after the
total length of 5000-ft, the error in the chain was
+9.0 inches. Find the total true length of the Line?

Problem 6:
Volume of the earth was measured with the help of a
30-m chain and was found to be 1130 m3. If the error
in the chain at the start and end of the measurement
was 40-cm and 60-cm respectively then find the true
volume of earth work?

Problem 7:
The plan of an old survey plotted to a scale of 80ft
to 1 inch was found to have shrunk so that a line
originally 10 inches along was found to measure 9.75-
inches. There was also a note on the plan that the
100ft chain used in the survey was 3 inches too short.
If the area of the plan measured now is 20 square
inches. Find the true area of the survey?
