ABOUT THE CASE-

ENSERCH is an expanding energy company which had grown out of a local distribution gas
pipeline company in Dallas, Texas. Electric Bond and Share Company (EBASCO) were founded
by Thomas Edison in the early 20th century.

Several large engineering companies have moved into remediation work which was related to
cleaning up of environment. This market was growing rapidly with 3

INTRODUCTION TO RISK MANAGEMENT:

Risk is an uncertain event that, if it occurs, has a positive or negative effect on project objectives.
Risk management is the total process of identifying, measuring, and minimizing uncertain events
affecting resources. Risk Management is the name given to a logical and systematic method of
identifying, analyzing, treating and monitoring the risks involved in any activity or process. Risk
Management is a proactive attempt to recognize and manage internal events and external threats
that affect the likelihood of a project·s success:

y Œhat can go wrong (risk event)


y How to minimize the risk event·s impact (consequences)
y Œhat can be done before an event occurs (anticipation)
y Œhat to do when an event occurs (contingency plans)

Company·s outlook towards Risk management process:

There were two aspects:

1) It assessed up-front and tried to both anticipate the risks and identify solutions that
would overcome those risks
2) Its bid included a very tight specification of the activities it proposed.
