This brochure outlines nine reasons to advance your current version of backup software to Data
Protector 9.0. Advantages of moving to Data Protector software 9.0 include the following:
Run your backup and recovery on the most current and modern architecture including a new
internal database
Take advantage of new innovative features: snapshot protection, federated deduplication,
enterprise-grade scalability, priority based scheduling, virtual server protection, and real-time
analytical reporting. All of these features are integrated to protect todays highly dynamic and
diverse datacenter environment.
The key highlight of this latest release is introduction of intuitive reporting and monitoring,
guided intelligence, and real-time predictive analytics that simplify and optimize your backup
and recovery experience.

1. Maximize storage capacity utilization with a highly

efficient deduplication
Built-in deduplication within HP Data Protector software is powered by HP StoreOnce, a
patented, highly efficient deduplication technology. HP StoreOnce technology utilizes advanced
algorithms that enables a high storage efficiency and high speed backup and recovery
experience. It is a light-weight technology that can run at the source of the application, backup
server, or backup target device. This flexibility enables you to achieve cost efficiencies and the
most optimal backup infrastructure.
The powerful combination of Data Protectors native integration with primary application
environments such as Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Hyper-V, SQL Server, VMware vSphere,
Oracle, SAP, SAP HANA and HP StoreOnce deduplication dramatically reduces storage
requirements for protecting these applications and improves their restore speed.
Overall with HP StoreOnce, you gain improved business continuity, lower total cost of
ownership, and optimal use of backup infrastructure and IT resources while reducing your risk
exposure due to compliance, governance, and missed SLAs.

2. Dramatically improve utilization of backup

infrastructure through real-time analytical insights
As an HP Data Protector customer, you can take advantage of a highly interactive and intuitive
dashboard called HP Backup Navigator that delivers analytical insights to help you gain better
utilization of backup resource.
HP Backup Navigator, a companion product to HP Data Protector software, enables you to
collect, correlate, and analyze trends in backup and recovery data to isolate and expose
patterns in your data protection operation. Designed to rapidly analyze large volumes of
operational data, HP Backup Navigator quickly identifies performance-related information,
capacity utilization rates and trends, and future infrastructure requirements, based on
projected data characteristics and infrastructure capabilities. This analysis helps you to plan
and optimize your CAPEX and OPEX spending to target 100% utilization of your data protection
infrastructure and keeps you from resorting to reactionary approaches to problem resolution
that often lead to complicated future challenges.

Analyzing and trending historical backup data results in predictions concerning future needs.

3. Anticipate issues and proactively address them

before they occur
HP Backup Navigators reporting system includes interactive and interrelated capabilities that
enable it to act as an intelligent guide that can analyze, isolate, and make recommendations
for issues that may exist within your data protection approach. Unlike static reporting tools,
HP Backup Navigator provides summary information concerning the status of each backup
infrastructure component, the operating systems involved, and the backup definitions.
With this level of detail, issues that can arise, wherever they arise, can be isolated to the
specific point in the backup infrastructurelogical and physical. Once isolated, IT staff can
trace the problem to its root cause, quickly resolve current issues, and use the trending and
predictability aspects of the tool. These capabilities help you address future resource conflicts
and systematic/systemic issues before they cascade into catastrophic, expensive failures. For
example, HP Backup Navigator simplifies troubleshooting by automatically and intelligently
selecting a unique set of relevant reportscalled Related Reportthat can expedite your
root-cause investigation. These small report sets are chosen based on the issue or problem
that you are trying to discover and the logical next steps that should be taken to get more value.

User interface cues highlight problem areas while related reports guide identifies next logical points
of investigation.

Interactive user interface components enable the IT staff to drill deeper into the problematic area.

4. Easily meet strict recovery SLAs through snapshot

integration and Instant Recovery
According to Gartner, HP is one of the earliest vendors to embrace the strategy of integrating
with storage arrays to manage the creation, backup, and recovery of snapshots. We believe that
snapshots are an excellent way to address the issue of shrinking backup windows to minimize the
impact of backup on application performance and availability, and meet strict RPO/RTO needs.
HP offers snapshot integration through Zero Downtime Backup (ZDB) and Instant Recovery (IR)
features. Zero Downtime Backup can manage and orchestrate the process of snapshot creation
and copying of data to secondary storage. With Instant Recovery, you can stage application-
consistent snapshots on the storage array for rapid recovery. The number of snapshots on the
array can be easily configured. This capability, combined with application integration, enables
you to meet very strict RTO requirements in mission-critical application environments.
Extending ZDB/IR support for HP 3PAR StoreServ
Now you can take advantage of Zero Downtime Backup and Instant Recovery for data and
applications in the HP 3PAR StoreServ environment. File systems, Oracle, SAP, and Microsoft
applications for all the leading operating systemsWindows, Linux, and HP-UXare supported.

5. Improve IT productivity with simplified and centralized

backup, recovery, and replication management
With HP Data Protector software, you can manage backup and recovery (across physical and
virtual servers), user management, object copy, device and media management, monitoring
and reporting, disaster recovery, snapshot management, and client management directly from
the HP Data Protector console.
With HP StoreOnce integration, the same HP Data Protector console is extended to perform
additional management, configuration, and reporting, allowing you to:
Create and configure StoreOnce Catalyst stores (both encrypted and non-encrypted)
Set bandwidth throttling that enables you to specify and control the amount of bandwidth
consumed by the backup process
Set threshold quotas for StoreOnce stores and get alerts when those thresholds are reached.
This enables you to proactively manage capacity of StoreOnce devices.
Manage the replication process between multiple Catalyst stores

In a nutshell, with HP Data Protector you can centrally manage your backup, recovery, disaster
recovery, and replication processes across remote sites, datacenters, and physical and virtual
environments with a single platform.

6. Improve disaster recovery and recovery time with

increased automation
The recent version of HP Data Protector software augments its best-in-class Enhanced
Automated Disaster Recovery (EADR) capability by introducing more flexibility and automation
to improve the speed of disaster recovery. These new capabilities include:
New object selection methods, restore options, and wizard pages that allow you to further
simplify and automate the image creation and system recovery process.
Administrators can choose to inject additional drivers during the time of image creation and/or
image restore process, which greatly reduces the overall system recovery time.
The new flexible recovery options automate the full system recovery, including the restore of
user data from Data Protector backup sessions.

7. Identify and prioritize backup jobs for critical

workloads
HP Data Protector introduces a new Advance Scheduler that includes flexible, more granular
options to create a backup policy. The new advanced scheduler also offers more granular
options to schedule your backup jobs such as every minute, hour, day, week, and month, and
there are special options for last day of the month or the year. In addition to that, the Advance
Scheduler allows you to assign priority to your backup jobs.
Workloads can be identified and prioritized based on their RPO/RTO requirements to ensure
that your most critical datasets are backed up first. This advance option is highly beneficial in
resource constrained environments to ensure the protection of mission-critical applications
over less important datasets. These priority settings are also useful during the events when
a backup job has to be suspended to accommodate other critical operations that require full
computing resources. However, once critical operations are completed, priority settings help
ensure that systems are backed up urgently rather than being stuck in the backup queue.

8. Reduce your cost and backup software footprint with

an advanced, agile, and highly scalable architecture
HP Data Protector takes the scalability and performance of backup and recovery to a
completely new level by introducing enhanced, high-performing backup capabilities via a single
Data Protector instance capable of scaling to thousands of clients, one trillion filenames, and
100,000 sessions per day. Leveraging a standard off-the-shelf relational database as a new
internal database, this newly designed architecture delivers up to 96% footprint reduction in
your DP infrastructure and 140 TB/HR1 of throughput in a single session, providing significant
cost reduction, scalability, and performance improvements.
Data Protector also simplifies operations by allowing several internal maintenance tasks to
occur at the same time as backup and restore operations and provides GUI enhancements to
manage larger data sets.
