EXPERIMENT

OBJECTIVE

There are three objects of an introductory experiments as follows:

1. To measure the action of shear in a beam

2. To measure the shearing force at normal section of a loaded beam and to check its
agreement with theory.
3. To convert strain reading into force.

1. Set up the beam as shown in the diagram above.

2. Use the spirit level to level the beam.
3. Zero the HDA200 display and record in table1.
4. Place a 10N weight on W3 hanger and level the beam. Record the strain value from the
HDA200 into table1.
5. Repeat the procedure with 20N on W3.Remove the 20N on W3.
6. Remove the 20N load and level the beams.
7. Place 10N on W2 hanger. Level the beams. Record the strain reading in table2.
8. Finally transfer the 10N load to W1 hanger, levelling the beams as before and recording the
strains in table3, which should be less than zero load value thus showing that the shear at C
is negative.
9. Unload the beam and setup the apparatus as shown below.

10. Level the beams as before recording the zero load strain reading into table4.
11. Place 5N on W1 hanger, and 12N on W3 hanger. Level the beam and record the strain
reading from the HDA200 into table2.
12. Finally replace the 2N load on W2 hanger with a 10N load. Level the beams and record the
strain readings in table2.
13. Finally replace the 2N load on W2 hanger with a 10N load. Level the beams and record the
strain readings in table2.
