ACT ONE

Act One Scene One

I open my eyes to the glare of incredibly bright lights. The floor is cool and smooth, the air is still. A hush

Really, Leigh? Sam asked incredulously as he finished reading aloud. Seems a little...
dramatic.
Thats exactly the point! Im applying to theater school, theyrelookingfordramaineverything
I submit, papers, tapes, everything. Leigh groaned and flopped back across her mattress, brushing her
short, choppy bangs out of her eyes. She tossed the thick packet onto Sams lap, throwing her arms up
over her face with a sigh of frustration.
Sam thumbed throughthepages,quirkingatellingeyebrowathisfriend.Leighturnedherhead

completely drained from the realization that maybe her paper would never be good enough, that she
might never be good enough, to get into the school of her dreams.
Maybe you could talk to Mrs. Simens, shell know exactly what they look for in submission

No, I already asked her to work overtime after class to help me practice my audition tape
program. Im not gonna ask her to spend any more of her time on me. Speaking of class, there was

Leigh slipped through the open doorway into the studio and slid her bag onto abenchnearthe

petite older woman with long gray hair wrapped into a tight bun. Mrs. Simens was Leighs drama and
vocal coach, and Leigh thought of her almost as a grandmother, thoughshewouldneveractuallyadmit
to it.
Mrs. Simens smiled back, ducking her head to whisper surreptitiously in Leighs direction. I
wouldnt go bragging about this to just anyone, but I feel that you, my dear, haveaverygoodchanceof

pushed a few stray strands of hair into her bun, then clapped her hands to get everyones attention.
Spinning away from Leigh, Mrs. Simens announced, Alright, class. Today we will be focusing
on what I think is the most poignant emotion in the world of theatre: sadness, suchasdespairorgrief.
You all, no doubt, have attended the performance of a show where the actors portrayal of a character
was so exposed and accessible that it brought tears to your eyes, andthatiswhatwewillbeworkingon

were performing while reading off of a teleprompter. As Mrs. Simens explained the activity, the
scattered students went to stand next to their designated partners. She stopped them all with a single
snap of her fingers, saying, Ah-ah-ah, not so fast. You must work with someone youve never read a
dialogue with before. For example, well have, hm... Leigh, work with Gabi. She clapped once more,
dismissing them to their reading.
Leigh sighed inwardly, but she reminded herself that she was an actress. She could at least
pretend to enjoy working with Gabriella DeVite, even if she was stuck-up about her parents stage
success. She made her way over to where Gabi was standing next to the table covered in scripts.
Oh, look whos here. She cant even be bothered toshowforclassontime, howssheevergoing
to make it into AADA? Gabis tone dripped with sarcasm as she sniggered along with her friends. She
had also applied to the Academy, and there seemed to be nothing she delighted in more than making
Leigh doubt if she would ever be accepted into her dream school. Sheflippedherlongauburnhairover
her shoulder, wrapping it around her fingers as she surveyed Leighs dirty Converse, ripped jeans and
torn Wicked sweatshirt with disdain.
Leigh just smiled. So, what scripts are you thinking about reading through? I see some Dear
Evan Hansen, a copy of Into the Woods She said as she slipped past Gabis friends, carefulnottobump
into any one of them, and sifted through the pile of scripts.
Fine, whatever. Gabi sounded vaguely annoyed, perhaps because her commentsdidntappear
to have bothered Leigh in the slightest. Leigh, however, felt hollow and sick to her stomach. She never
felt as unsure of herself as when Gabi was around, because Gabi was so apparently confident. Her
parentshadbothbeenstarsofthescreenintheiryouth,soGabiactedlikeshewasbornforthespotlight,
or rather, the spotlight existed to shine on her. Leigh just reinforced the grin on her lips and grabbed
several scripts. She steeled herself for the inevitable criticism and walked over to the edgeofoneofthe
benches. This was going to be a long day.

open. She unfolded the paper inside, scanned it for the words she had been dreaming about since she
was ten, and as Sam watched, her face fell.
What does it say? he asked worriedly, as she straightened the letter out on the table.

Sam stood up. Well, I guess Ill just have to put this back, then... he said with exaggerated
disappointment, pulling Leighs suitcase out from behind the couch. Shelaughed, thenwentandbegan

Leigh sighed as she leafed through the papers covering the table in her kitchen. Sam was

did.
Sam, do you mind watching that in the other room? I cant focus with that distracting, and I
have to study for my exams today or I never will.
Sam threw his arm dramatically over his face and said in a Shakespearean voice, I cannot, for
the movie I so deeply love and care for is just beginning, and if I move, I daresay I may miss it
Leigh groaned and put her head in her hands. How have I survived two years in the same
apartment as you?
Sam didnt answer, just laughed and settled himself deeper into the couch. Leigh sighed again
and tried again to immerse herself back into her studies.

Simens drew Leigh aside as the cheers faded into an excited buzz, and said, Congratulations, Leigh! I
knew you had that special something in you from the start, and Im so proud that youve realized it too.
Leigh smiled and gave her a hug. I couldnt have done this without your help and
encouragement, and I hope you know how grateful I am for all of your help over the years.
Mrs. Simens squeezed Leigh tighter, whispering I have some big news for you. When youre
done partying tonight, send me a text and Ill come over to your apartment and tell you all about it.
Leigh pulled away as Samtappedhershoulder.ShegaveMrs.SimensaquestioninglookasSam

later, and she turned away with Sam to rejoin their friends and the celebrating.

again. From backstage, Leigh heard Camilles first notes swell out of her mouth, low, rumbling,
powerful, climbing up and up until the orchestra filled in the silence beneath the melody. The first
melody never failed to give Leigh chills, and as the lights came up, she knew for certain that this was
what she had been born to do. As she bounced on her toes, and shook out thetensioninhershoulders,
the lights came on full, and she took her cue. Finally, finally, on that stage. At last, at last.
