Rooftop Gardens
I stayed at The Cocker for two great nights, and loved everything about it. San Telmo is
a great neighborhood to explore, and you're within walking distance to it all.
The rooftop gardens made it extra special, particularly the hammock on the very top,
where I napped in the sun, overlooking the city below. The breakfast table was stunning,
and the dulce de leche croissants were delicious, along with afternoon picata. The spiral
stairs were very cool, and free internet was nice. My room was small, and the bathroom
was setup so you shut the door and it showered on the toilet bowl, but it all worked and
dried off. I loved the design of the entire room. Above all, the conversation pit was the
most unique. I want to create one in my own home. It was sooo cozy! The staff was
very helpful as well; I liked the reservations trust policy, where they didn't need my
credit card to hold the room. It's also a bonus that this hotel would be 3x more
expensive in the U.S. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat!

The Cocker is knocked out beautiful. Our room (19-03) was two stories with the
bathroom located above the bedroom with large open glass walls. It has been feautured
in several magazines. We had a patio on the rooftop with a table and chairs that was
ideal for drinking wine. Our bed was very comfortable. The Cocker is ideally located to
restaurants and attractions in San Telmo, especially the street fair on Sunday. Amanda
greeted us when we arrived and was fun to visit with about tango, restaurants, etc.. She
helped us with everything we needed. We enjoyed our breakfast every morning.
Amanda suggested a restaurant, Cafe San Juan, which is nearby, and made reservations
for us. It was excellent. We met Marianna when we checked out, and she was very
pleasant and helpful. My wife and I thought that The Cocker was a unique and beautiful
place. We were very happy staying there and have no complaints about anything.

Stairs to 12/06
More photos
We have just returned from a three-month RTW* trip. The first stop was Buenos Aires.
After locating enough peso coins we rode the 86 bus for two hours to the quirky barrio
of San Telmo...
My partner and I loved The Cocker . Our expectations were delightfully exceeded. We
liked 19/03 (especially the courtyard) and loved 12/06 (blissfully romantic).
Amanda welcomed us with refreshing drinks and a beautifully annotated map of the
area. She proved to be an informative, witty and elegant host. Her team of helpers made
sure breakfasts were leisurely and odd requests were acted upon.
It is difficult to describe what makes the Cocker so blissfully enjoyable. Indeed, I am
not sure if the Cocker is actually a hotel, but if it is, it is my favourite hotel in the world.
And as for the lomo steak and malbec at Desnivel...

Great introduction to BA
The Cocker

The Cocker gave us a wonderful introduction to Buenos Aires. After a long flight from
London, sitting outside on the terrace and chatting about our plans and receiving
suggestions from Amanda was the ideal start. The building is very characterful, airy and
bright. Breakfast was a simple but tasty and filling affair.
Our room (12-06) was large and quiet with good air conditioning. The wet room was
something of an oddity, as others have noted. Assume that EVERYTHING will get wet
when showering. Nipping out into the bedroom to grap a dry towel makes for an
interesting challenge when the door to the bathroom faces an unshuttered window....
Still, such idiosyncrasies are all part of the pleasure of staying at The Cocker.
The building is very well located within San Telmo. There are many excellent
restaurants nearby (many of which were recommended by The Cocker) and the main
tango venues are a short and pleasant stroll away. At the end of our stay (on 6
December) the San Telmo locals held their annual street party/parade, which was
reminiscent of a Brazilian carnival. Great fun.

We stayed at the Cocker for 5 nights in November. It was our first time to South
America and we were a little nervous about safety but we were so glad we chose San
Telmo and the Cocker for our introduction to BsA.. The neighbourhood and the Cocker
suited us very well - enough local flavour and interest, with ordinary people going about
their everyday lives, and electic shops, excellent restaurants and cool bars only a block
or two away.
Amanda was a gracious and welcoming host, and along with the rest of her team could
not have been more helpful - recommending tango shows and booking tickets. Our
room was beautiful, soft white linens, high ceiling and big french windows, and a huge
shower room. We really liked the stylish terrace (and nightly complementary wine and
cheese), and breakfast was perfect, fruit, juice, yoghurt, toast, pastries and good coffee.
It is a peaceful location and the only noise we heard was the roar of the football crowd
in La Boca on sunday afternoon and a rather noisy street party nearby (or maybe just a
few friends enjoying the parilla!) for a couple of hours on saturday night.
Overall the Cocker was very good value, arty, stylish but relaxed and welcoming. We
would highly recommend it.

We booked our stay several months before the management changed, and were
wondering what to expect. We couldn't have been happier.
The rooms were clean. We enjoyed the casual (and not too early!) breakfast where we
could meet the other tenants and exchange suggestions for activities. Amanda, Mariana
and Gustavo were all helpful without being pushy or meddlesome. And we loved the
patios! The top one had a hammock which was perfect for the early mornings when I
woke before the rest of my traveling group.
One note about the bathrooms: they are continental-style wetrooms. Remember to take
out your toilet paper before you shower and you will have no problems.

My huband and I spent the first 3 nights of our honeymoon at the Cocker and we loved
it. Amanda and her team were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. On checking in
Amanda greeted us with coffee and a map of shops, bars and restaurants recommended
by the Cocker - a really good idea we didn't find anywhere else. One morning we
mentioned to her that the door of our wetroom didn't shut properly and by the time we
returned to our room that evening it was fixed. A nice touch is the picadas (cheese,
olives and meats) provided at the big dining room table each evening for guests, with a
glass of wine. This allowed us to chat to guests and staff and get ideas for places to go
in BA.
Our room was 17-04, and it had a conversation pit, big, comfy bed, and desk. Yes,
there's no wardrobe to hang clothes in, but there are a few hangers behind the huge
mirror. The one thing we didn't really love was the wetroom, as every time we took a
shower the loo and entire floor, of course, got wet. But this is really a small gripe about
an otherwise wonderful stay!
Liked great room, friendly staff, very good value for money
Disliked wetroom

I recently spent six nights at the Cocker, and overall, I had a very nice stay and felt that
the B&B is a tremendous value for money.
From the start, Amanda was friendly and extremely professional in all her
correspondence. Most days, Amanda served breakfast and answered questions, made
reservations, arranged tango lessons, etc. in the morning hours from 9-early afternoon.
If Amanda was not available in the morning, Mariana served breakfast and faciliated our
days. In addition, a picada (plate of cheese, olives, salami, etc.) and wine were served in
the early evening for the guests to unwind together and tide those of us not used to
eating at 10 p.m. over until dinner.
I stayed in room 19-03, and really enjoyed it. The room was beautiful, and the bed was
the most comfy that I stayed in during my travels. The lack of closet or drawers was a
bit odd, but hangers and hooks were provided so at least a few things were able to be
hung. I would caution anyone staying in this room that the stairs to the famous
bathroom are very narrow and steep, though, and with the wet room situation, it is
VERY easy to slip and fall on these stairs.
Although the neighborhood is not as picturesque as either Palermo or Recoleta, I did not
have any problems walking around during the day or night by myself and I did not hear
or any problems from my fellow guests, almost all of whom were female. San Telmo is
a very pleasant neighborhood, but it is still at the beginning of its gentrification process,
so it is definitely not for everyone. (As an aside, it's not as pretty as Palermo or
Recoleta, but I found many of the restaurants quite a bit cheaper).
With regard to some of the issues that other reviews have brought up:
1. I did not hear a peep from Casa Del Cantantes the whole week I stayed at the Cocker.
Amanda and Mariana do sometimes play the radio in the kitchen while they're preparing
breakfast, but I never heard it from my room, and it did not bother me.
2. When I booked the reservation several months ago, Amanda clearly stated in her
email that payment was cash only. In addition, the cash only policy is stated on the
information card in the room.
I would note to anyone that this is not the Four Seasons, though. The Cocker is a small
operation and the building is old. While I did not experience the problems some other
reviewers have had, the property has its "quirks" and "character." A few nights into my
stay, the toilet in my room started having trouble (Amanda came right away to fix the
problem), and another room hhad problems with the water pressure of its shower. There
are LOTS of stairs (really, hiking at Iguazu had nothing on the Cocker). Towels are
changed daily, but rooms are not cleaned everyday. So certainly, this is not the property
for everyone.
I would say that this B&B is a tremendous value though, and I highly recommend it.

My husband and I have just returned to the US after 4 nights at The Cocker, and it was
just fabulous. After staying the first 3 nights at a B&B a few blocks away that was just
short of a nightmare, The Cocker was a breath of fresh air. Great to look at, rooms
cleaned daily, nice continental breakfast every morning and great hosts. The owner was
away at the time and she had a great local girl named Mariana and a guy named Jack
from NY watching over things. It's in a great location in San Telmo and not even a block
from where you can have a great dinner and catch the Sunday antiques fair. One thing to
keep in mind is that there is a new tango house that has just opened up next door, and
was quite loud going into the morning hours. The rooms all have "wet room" bathrooms
and a cool decor, although no storage to hang items. It's a great value.

My husband and I absolutely loved this guest house! Ian and Rocco (the cocker the
hotel is named after) are the very best hosts!!! We felt like we were staying with friends
of ours. We unfortunately never met Aiden who was out of town while we stayed.
Ian really went above and beyond to make sure our trip was full of must-sees, custom to
what we were looking for. He booked a futbol (soccer) game at the Bombonera with the
real fans!!! Not the over priced single "safe" seats!!! We were surrounded by singing
jumping wonderfully wild fans! We only sat during half time! Our group was led by a
few local guides who took us for pizza and beer frist! He also gave great suggestions for
fabulous resturants, art exhibits, tango shows,....whatever we wanted! Staying here
during our honeymoon was fun but private, posh but cozy. In the home, the decor is a
collection of meaningful collectables, ultra cool antiques, & custom pieces that show off
the exquisite style of these two lovely men! The value here is just so so so unbeatable!
You are right in a walking distance from shopping, the sunday market, antique
shopping, wonderful resturants, tango shows. It's an older part of town that's not
pretentious! LOVED IT!!

My wife and I had a grand time at The Cocker. Despite having a name that always
demanded a little explanation (its for the now-moved dog) we loved its unique layout,
cool rooms, and fun hosts. It appears the two guys who ran it before are gone, but
Amanda did a fine job while we were there. Everything about our run was pleasant,
though we are not a fan of 'wet rooms', though they are common in South America.
What's wrong with shower curtains? The breakfasts were fantastic. We'd happliy stay
there again!

What a wonderful "hidden gem" the Cocker is... and although we tried to book in for 4
nights 5 months prior to our arrival, we only managed to stay for 2 nights... but all
worth it, so book well in advance to enjoy the fantastic service of Ian + Aiden and their
friendly Cocker Spaniel - Rocco - a must stay place in B.A.!!!
From the arrival the experience, we felt right at home... we were served a lovely cup of
tea with cherry's on our own terrace (fantastic room #19-03 with their signature
bathroom on top of the bed) and afterwards were given a thorough explanation of the
do's in/around the San Telmo areas - including assisting us with restaurant reservations -
we were then handed over our own key to the front door of the "house", which made it
feel very personal and right at home!!!
Breakfast was an amazingly nice selection of breads/sweets, fruits, yoghurts, fresh juice
and all restaurant recommendations by Ian+Aidan were very good!!!
We fully enjoyed our stay and would love to come back to the Cocker soon again.... and
it is indeed the best place we stayed in during our extensive travels around the world
and the place that we were looking forward to... and certainly did not dissapoint!!!
Liked The fantastic hosts of The Cocker and the room set up!!!
Disliked Nothing....

If you have read the other positive reviews, then I don't have much else to add for they
are all true. Yet, as an avid review reader myself it's always nice to know that the
reviews are up to date. And YES, the place is still awesome!
Ian is absolutely fabulous (always go with his recommendations - he's spot on), Rocco,
the cocker, is a gentleman, and the place looks and feels like the amazing photos and the
design of their website, with the fragrance of the lilies to boot.
My husband who loved the Palermo area more than San Telmo said he would still
gladly return to The Cocker when we go back to BA, as would I, naturally.
BTW - if you hate stairs, this is not the place for you as there are a lot of them. I don't
love them too much but the place was well worth all the climbing.

From the moment you walk through the doors of the Cocker, you feel as though you are
being welcomed home. The decor is cozy yet contemporary with a few whimsical
twists. Renovation of the century-old building has not only preserved, but enhanced the
original impression.
Our room was smartly decorated and had an enormous bouquet of fragrant lilies. Even
the lighting and bathroom layout were creatively executed. The duvet and pillows were
so soft and fluffy we considered laying in bed all day.
When we did descend for breakfast, we were greeted with a veritable cornucopia of
seasonal fresh fruit! In addition there were pastries, cereals, yogurt, toast, milk, juice,
coffee, tea, and anything else as per request (the day prior).
Ian, our lovely host, had a magnanimous and effervescent personality that absolutely
brightened our holiday. He had numerous suggestions for things to do and eat, and the
best way to go about doing them. He was always thoughtful and genuine to us, as
though we were friends and not simply guests.
The Cocker is unquestionably, without a doubt the best place to stay in Buenos Aires.
Period.

We stayed in room 19-02. The design of the room and furnishings are very interesting
and romantic; however, no one appears to be maintaining the quality and cleanliness.
The main problem was the wetroom. There was extensive mildew visible on the floor
and the window. It was obvious that the wetroom was not cleaned thoroughly for some
time, as the amount of mildew present would not have accumulated overnight. The sink
had hair and plastic in the drain - again not much attention to detail in cleaning the
room. We notified Sam (works evenings) about the problem. He was attentive in
addressing the problem. The wetroom was cleaned, but appears very worn and in need
of tile replacement to fully address the problem. The owner, Amanda, who never
introduced herself and only said two words to us ( hello on 2 occasions), was present the
next morning and expressed no concern whatsoever about the room. It was strange, as
she was visible during our stay, but never attempted to engage us in conversation nor
ask about our stay . We had great experiences and lovely hosts at our previous B&B in
BA (Posada Palermo), so when we got to the Cocker, we found Amanda's lack of
hospitality surprising. Sam hosted the provided wine and cheese on the first night of our
arrival and Amanda was around, but never bothered to make an appearance to greet us
(or the other guests). We had never met such an uninterested owner in all our travels.
Some other reviewers commented on the previous owners versus the current owner. In
this case, I agree with their conclusions. The Cocker was renovated and designed in an
amazing way; however, it is not being maintained with the care and attention it
deserves. Our room, which was probably once shabby and chic, appeared more shabby
than it should. I think that such an old building requires upkeep that is just not being
done by the current owner. We found a piece of the door lock and a large curtain holder
laying behind the mirror - they broke at some point prior to our stay and no one
bothered to fix them. It's disappointing to see such a wonderful house losing its charm
and allure. The breakfasts are adequate and attended to by Marianna. She sets the table
and provides coffee, tea, and toast. She also had little to say to the guests each morning
we went to breakfast. It was only on our last morning that she walked us to the door and
became quite talkative in helping us get a taxi. As you will not likely get much personal
guidance at the Cocker, it is forturnate that they provide a list of recommended
restaurants, which are actually very good. On a positive note, the Cocker is located
within walking distance of all the places you would want to check out in San Telmo.

While I did not think it was nearly as bad as the previous reviewer, I also found it
somewhat underwhelming to stay at the Cocker
The location is fine, about 2 blocks away from the part of San Telmo you want to be in.
There are a lot of stairs to climb, depending on where your room is.
The shower/bathroom is all-in-one, it is not enjoyable to use.
The pictures of the rooms, while honest, do not give a real feel for the rooms, which
were small, and closetless.
I felt that the hosts were there to help, and were very pleasant.
On more note, there is some kind of a dance club that opened up next door, while we
never had an issue, I imagine that some rooms would be noisy, I think they were
working on sorting out the issue with their neighbor, but don't know what the resolution
was. Coming home at 3am we could definitely hear a lot of noise, just not in the rooms.

We stayed at The Cocker for two nights having stayed the previous two at Casa Bolivar.
The Cocker is closer the the centre of San Telmo and is a great place to start your trip
because the owners (two English guys) are very helpful and spend time orienting you at
the beginning of your stay - they give you a custom made map with their
eating/drinking recommendations which are all good. The downside is that if you stay in
the two rooms on the roof terrace you have to climb a lot of stairs and the rooms are
very small, albeit cleverly and very stylishly designed.

The Cocker is a very nice place to stay in BA. The rooms are comfortable and the
service was great. Will and Agnes were managing The Cocker during our stay and they
were very helpful in getting us adjusted to the language and the layout of the city.
As mentioned before, anybody with physical disabilities would have a hard time with
the stairs in the building. Otherwise, most people would enjoy the style and comfort of
the Cocker. The wet rooms take a little bit to get used to, but they do their job. The
breakfast is very basic (it's basically a cup of coffee or tea).
The San Telmo neighborhood is quite nice. It is much different from Palermo and other
fashionable areas in BA. Seems like a nice relaxed neighborhood that people actually
live and work in. It's a bit off the beaten track, but taxis are cheap and the area seems
safe.
The Cocker is a great place to stay in BA. It's best feature is the personal service and the
price, which probably can't be beaten. It's not the best place you can stay in BA, but it's
the best place you can stay for a reasonable price.

Surprising find in San Telmo, lovely grand piano and huge fur- covered sofa in the
lounge. The bedrooms are on various floors separated by spiral staircases so be careful
if you have lots of heavy cases. We had two double beds in our room, with a curtain for
privacy (we were travelling with 2 girls aged 11 & 14). Tastefully decorated, lovely
bedlinen but there were no cupboards so all our cases got in the way for our 5 day stay.
Will & Agnes couldn't have been more helpful, giving us a map with all their favourite
restaurants on (which we tried and agreed with) organising transport, helping with
translations and giving us ideas of places to visit. Make sure you eat late at night as
breakfast is only from 9am, which can be a drawback if you have kids or want an early
cup of tea. Overall we were really happy here, but tea/coffee facilities and a cupboard
would have made all the difference.

Five stars for value, attractive rescued building, helpful stand ins for the owners
holiday.Good breakfast.
It is time it was also said Ave Juan de Garay, and San Telmo too are in no great shape. Is
any BA street? (the Alvear Hotel seemed rather close to a container terminal in the
Recoleta district )
The stairs at the Cocker start before the front door and are quite narrow up to
"reception",the stairs to your room are spiral.Baggage handling can be a nightmare.
The roof gardens/decks are great,if the weather is too.In early autumn we had wind rain
lightning, and dont forget several of the rooms are accessed via this outside area.Because
of this expect the noises of BA to be louder than expected, inparticular the school yard
below .
The quiet air con unit helped bring down the humidity but the cold bathroom was a
great steam producer.I was cold at this time of year.
Picky, sure but after all the five stars lets be honest?

My name is Richard and I have spent 4 nights at Moreno Buenos Aires a few weeks
ago. The city is amazing, there are great restaurants nearby (Puerto Madero is only a 5
minute walk), Tango Clubs within walking distance and the hotel is only two blocks
away from the celebrated Plaza de mayo. The location of this hotel is definitely one of
the best, in the heart of San Telmo district. Here you can find the traditional Flea &
Antique market every weekend. The rooms are huge and modern. The on-site restaurant
(recently opened) is the new hot spot in BA and the food & drinks are fantastic. The
hotel staff cannot be more friendly. Will certainly return.

I've stayed at many hotels in Buenos Aires, and for a first-time visitor to the city, I can't
recommend this hotel any more highly. The location is PRIME for many of the must-see
tourist destinations; Casa Rosada, Avenida Florida, the San Telmo street fair are all
within easy walking distance. The rooms are truly huge, modern, and well-appointed,
and the streets are blissfully quiet in the evenings (which is not true in many other
neighborhoods). *EVERYONE* I know feels very safe in that area, even at night.
There's really nothing to worry about there. The staff speak excellent english, they're
warm, friendly, and well-informed, and had top-notch recommendations at the ready for
restaurants, sightseeing, etc. Strong, speedy Wi-Fi, and they've got a computer / printer
in the lobby, too. I loved the classic open-air elevator... very cool touch. Perfect bed
with great sheets, fantastic fixtures in the restrooms (flood showerhead!), and the
breakfast is simple, yet classy. (I had croissants, yogurt, fresh OJ, and delicious coffee
each morning). When their restaurant opens later this year, it will make a great hotel
even that much greater. Highly recommended.

This is a late review. I found an old box of matches tucked away in my case and was
reminded of this hotel. I found the large room I had, modern, clean, and different from
the usual. It was very good. Large means large in this case. The internet worked fine
with my lap top.
Breakfast, when I stayed, was a simple affair but coffee on the splendid roof terrace was
a joy ! You are perched amongst the church towers in the surrounding area.
The lifts were incredible and reminded me of those seen in old gangster movies. They
were a great feature. I did feel sorry for the staff who sometimes had to climb the stairs
to close the doors when some nincompoop forgot to slide close the doors.
All in all, I liked the place. A well accomplished renovation of an old building.

My boyfriend and I just returned from a two-week trip to Argentina and we stayed at the
Moreno Hotel twice - one night at the start of our trip and two nights at the end of it.
Both times we had an Extra, Extra Large room, and they did not disappoint - spotless
with clean bathrooms and linens and plenty of space. The decor was very modern and
the bed was comfortable. Complimentary WiFi access was available and the internet
speed was good. Staff - especially the bellhop - were friendly and welcoming, provided
maps and restaurant recommendations, and were always quick to offer to call a taxi for
us. The neighborhood is okay - we took cabs everywhere at night but walked around
during the day and never felt concerned. The hotel has excellent location - two blocks
south of Plaza de Mayo and about 6 to 8 blocks from Puerto Madero. The ferry terminal
to Uruguay is walking distance, as is Avenido 9 de Julio, the obelisk, Casa de Rosada,
Cafe Tortoni, and the Congressional Plaza. Recoleta and beyond are walking distance if
you want a long walk, but a cab only costs $18-$22 pesos, which is about $6 USD.
Never got up early enough to sample the provided breakfast, but we did go up to the
rooftop deck and take in the views - very nice! I can imagine that once the hotel
restaurant and bar are open, it will be even better as the closest restaurants and bars all
are in Puerto Madero.
Overall we felt this was an exceptional value for what we paid and would recommend
this hotel to anyone we knew traveling to Buenos Aires.

We stayed for 2 nights at the Moreno Hotel in early January 2009. It is only a couple
blocks away from the Casa Rosada and the Plaza de Mayo, on the edge of the San
Telmo district. We arrived on Sunday so were only a couple blocks from the famous
antiques flea market that seemed to go on for miles! The hotel is in an old art deco
building that has been refurbished. It is not much to look at from the street, especially
since they are still building the theater/restaurant. They were doing work on it so
hopefully it will open soon! Anyways, when we were shown our room we were
surprised at how enormous it was! It was bigger than most New York apartments and
furnished really beautifully. The view was of the cathedral (although we never heard
any bells, so that was good I suppose.) . The staff was very friendly and spoke English.
I'd definitely stay there again if I went back to Buenos Aires. Some people mentioned
that the area is a bit sketchy at night and I'd agree somewhat--the neighborhood is a total
ghost town at night, but I never felt "threatened" by it. I'd just advise to have the front
desk call you a radio taxi. This would be good advice for most big cities though. Also,
we visited La Boca to see El Caminito (the area with all the brightly painted buildings.)
It is amazing and definitely worth the trip, but take a taxi there and don't walk to La
Boca. It appears to be close on a map from San Telmo, but it is much farther than you'd
expect and you walk through some potentially dangerous areas.

Gorgeous Hotel
Our room
Rooftop
A group of 6 of us stayed at this hotel in September for one night. We wanted to stop in
BA for one night as we were flying from Lima to Rio.
The hotel is in a great area, not far from the shopping district, but on a quiet road with a
few cafes nearby.
The decor of the hotel was beautiful. Very trendy and modern and really big rooms and
bathrooms.
We loved the old style lift and the general feel about the place. Unfortunately we didn't
make it up in time for breakfast as we were too hungover after a very late night out in
BA's bars (but that's another story!) but the rooftop area where they serve breakfast
looked really lovely.
I would def recommend this hotel to anyone and would like to go back there some day.
P.S The staff spoke excellent English as well and there was free internet access.

My Boyfriend and I stayed here a few times while travelling in Argentina and each
experience at The Moreno was great. The first time we arrived at 8am after a long flight
and the staff could not have been nicer, checked us in straight away. Although not fully
finished (Bar Restaurant Theatre etc to come) I really dont think we could have picked
a better place to stay in Buenos Aires. The staff are professional, incredibly friendly and
helpful. The rooms are large and beautifully furnished. The beds are comfortable and
the showers are amazing! It was such a pleasant place to return to after a long day. The
hotel provides a basic continental breakfast. When this hotel is fully complete with its
bar & restaurant I have no doubt it will be the best in town. We loved our stay in this
cool art deco style hotel, great location at a fantastic price. Would recommend it to
anyone!

as.
No volvimos.

**** BEWARE *****New Owners If I were you I would disregard all reviews before
May 2008*****
First off, in the month or so before we arrived, the original owners of The Cocker sold
to a woman named Amanda. I was not informed of this. You can tell the original owners
infused a great deal of charm into the hotel, I only wish I had experienced staying there
before the change in ownership.
LOCATION - On the outskirts of San Telmo, bordering La Boca. Not exactly the central
San Telmo location I was hoping for, and walking too far in the wrong direction at night
(or getting a little lost) proved to be a dangerous event.
INSIDE - Once inside the hotel I noticed that things were looking a little shabby, the
marble on the stair fronts was slipping and had open gaps, the paint looked old and
scuffed up, in the lobby/lounge area there was some serious water damage to the plaster
ceiling (see photos), the shelves were half empty and the art was minimal (unlike the
photos from when the original owners occupied the space). It also smelled heavily of oil
based paint as they were renovating a new room on the main level. ****** A note about
this new room - it is tiny, tiny, tiny, right off the main hallway, with no window to the
outside and ZERO privacy, there is no way I would stay in this room, so beware if you
plan on booking this room********
We were then escorted up the rickety metal spiral staircase and into our room 17-04.
The room looked vaguely like the pictures on the website, except dated and a lot
smaller. My problems with this room:
*Small
*Dingy paint, scuffs all over the walls and floors
* No place to put your clothes
*No mattress pad on bed
*Cheap sheets
*Uncomfortable mattress
* Moldy down pillows that made both my husband and I sick
*Dead flowers in moldy water
*Wet room for the bathroom=wet toilet paper=wet toilet=icky
*Dirty cushions on lounge area
*Dirty blankets on lounge area
*Generally dirty room
*STRONG paint fumes coming from downstairs
My main problems with this room, other than the fact that I started sneezing as soon as I
walked in the door, were that it was very, very noisy and dirty. The room is above the
kitchen and breakfast room, you can hear every footstep and every word, and after
breakfast the maid listens to loud music on the radio in the kitchen, so there is little
chance for relaxing or reading.
I had booked 7 nights, but after three nights we left for a better hotel (the miravida soho
- see review, wonderful place). In the three nights we stayed, no one cleaned our room
or changed our towels or sheets once. The bathroom is a wet room and really needs to
be cleaned and wiped down every day, otherwise the toilet stays wet, you track wet shoe
prints all over the room, and it is generally just disgusting and damp.
After our second night, I told Amanda about my allergy to something in the room, and
that would be leaving the following day. She was nice enough, but asked us to pay for 5
1/2 nights. Well, that night ended up being the worst of all. Next door to The Cocker is
the CASA DE CANTANTE, so we got to hear bad show tunes and clapping through the
wall of our room until midnight. We finally fell asleep only to awake at 2:30 am to the
sounds of the owner and her friends back from a night of drinking. They were hanging
out in the kitchen listening to loud music, talking very loudly and smoking cigarettes,
which filled our room with smell of cigarette smoke. I had to go out to the landing to
put an end to it all, only to be heckled by her guests. It was really ridiculous; I can't
believe that the owner of the Hotel would have such complete disregard for her paying
guests. It was very immature and unprofessional.
Anyway, the next morning, after yet another terrible nights sleep I informed Amanda
that I was only willing to pay for 4 nights due to the spectacle the night before, and she
claimed to not know what I was talking about?!?! Maybe she was so drunk she could
not remember the events from the night before. So, we paid for 4 nights (which in
hindsight was WAY too generous) and left for the sanctuary that is the MIRAVIDA
SOHO in Palermo, god bless Jim for taking us in and saving our vacation.
The moral of this review is that The Cocker did not live up to my expectations or the
previous reviews, and I believe this is due to the change in ownership. Maybe the rooms
on the third floor are better, but a decent room would not make up for the new negligent
owner.
Read my review of the Miravida Soho if you want a quality, small (6 room) hotel, that is
owned by someone who really cares about their property and their hotel guests.
