Rhetorical Analysis Paper

Part 1: Analysis Description

I chose the Rhetorical Analysis essay from my English 1 class because it is something I
remember clearly. What we had to do for this paper was pick 5 articles and analyze them
rhetorically. The article I chose was When the Pepper spray wont go away, by the
Sacramento Bee Editorial Board this article was about how a police officer was pepper spraying
innocent civilians in the face so the campus hired consultants to improve the online reputations
of UC Davis and Chancellor Linda Katehi. I had to write about what the article was about using
context, logos, pathos, ethos along with what rhetorical choices the author used. The paper had to
be 3 pages long double spaced Times New Roman 12 font. It was pretty hard at first, but then
after looking at the prompt and the article it was easier to write. I was able to write so much after
understanding exactly what we had to do on the essay, I had to read the prompt over and over
and the parts to finally understand what to write about.

I needed to write the essay to understand the article more and to understand what a
rhetorical analysis paper is. I needed to write this paper so it can help me in my future english
classes. An Example from Grant-Davie, Keith. Rhetorical Situations and Their Constituents.
He talked about what makes up rhetorical situations and to have an improved grasp of what
rhetoric is. An example from the article In many rhetorical situations, there may be several
rhetors, including groups of people or institutions, and the discourse may address or encounter
several audiences with various purposes for reading. This quote means that there are different
audiences like groups of people or institutions and it involves audiences with various purposes
for reading. This relates to the piece of writing I chose, because it involved different audiences
and it involved rhetorical analysis and the four constituents, in the article he talked about
exigence as well in the rhetorical analysis and the different situations about rhetorical analysis.
From the piece of writing I talked about exigence to describe the article. The context of the
essay was from my English 1 class I talk about this throughout this essay . What led to this essay
was the teacher showed us what articles we had to write about then we had to pick one. This is
what led to writing this paper. The constraints I faced as a writer was there had to be a certain
limit for the paper. It had to be about one specific article. I had to stay in the framework of the
rhetorical situation. When it came to the audience, it was meant for the instructor. I wanted her to
read it and grade it. The writing was supposed to engage the reader, by explaining how the article
worked rhetorically.

Part 2: Description of Writing

The major chosen is Social Work. Social Work is work carried out by trained personnel
with the aim of alleviating the conditions of those in need of help or welfare. Writing in Social
Work is to convey ideas, whether its students, other social scientists, or the general population.
Its the way to share knowledge, findings, and/or information. Social Work also uses writing to
display connections between theories, challenge theories, or extend theories. Its the main role
of communication, and the best way to locate new findings and discussions in the field.
Furthermore Social Work uses reading, writing, and researching to explore questions about how
humans interact. Nothing seems to be unimportant, everything in this field is important there are
a lot of requirements to be completed for this field every little piece of information is important.
Also to become a Social Worker a bachelor's degree is required to start your education. The
exigence of Social work is to improve a societys overall well being, especially for the most
vulnerable populations. The context of Social Work where it came from it came from Jane
Addams who was a founder of of the U.S Settlement House Movement to establish settlement
houses in poor urban areas. Social Work began by concentrating on casework and the scientific
method, and the American Association of Hospital Social Workers established in 1918 to boost
formal education opportunities in social work. The audience for Social Work are Students who
want to major in Social Work, and Social Workers working in a department reading this will
help them learn more about Social Work.

Part 3: Discussion

Writing in Social Work is very difficult and requires a lot of work, Social Workers are used to
the difficult content required for a class such as Social Work 95. Sofiane uses a personal story
and tells his extensive research in the area, to make his readers believe in his credibility. This
class had a lot of work to be completed. Students had to volunteer for 30 hours to pass the class
along with two papers that dealt with the volunteering. Yes the writing chosen for part 1 would
be a good paper because the paper chosen deals with information from the field of Social Work
even though it was an assignment for an English class. Another reason is Social Work deals with
research, knowledge, and other important information, an example from the CSUS Handbook
Social scientists often conduct research using quantitative methods (methods that result in
numbers and statistics) and qualitative methods (methods focused on observing, describing, and
analyzing social behavior, social artifacts, and social institutions). This quote illustrates that
Social Workers, research social behavior and social institutions, basically they order and
structure the behavior of individuals by means of their normative character. The rhetorical
analysis from English 1, dealt with research and social institutions. This involved looking up
what the purpose of the article was. This is similar to writing in Social Work because it involves
finding the purpose behind the research. Principles drawn from the CSUS Handbook will help
with Social Work and the classes within the major, because there is a lot of essays in the field
along with a lot of research and this will help me in the future when I take more Social Work
classes. To continue the rhetorical analysis paper from English 1 it compares and does not
compare to writing in Social Work it does not compare because in Social Work you do not have
to learn about rhetorical analysis but writing about what the article meant kind of deals with
Social Work because you are finding information.

Writing in Social Work is very difficult and requires a lot of work, Social Workers are used to
the difficult content required for a class such as Social Work 95. This class had a lot of work to
be completed. Students had to volunteer for 30 hours to pass the class along with two papers that
dealt with the volunteering. Students learned that it takes a lot of hard work to be a Social
Worker you have to earn your undergraduate degree, get volunteer experience in the field,
complete a master's degree program, get supervised experience following graduation finding an
entry level job and moving up the ladder. So if you ever want to be a Social Worker prepare for
all the work you have to do along with the requirements for the field it will not be easy. Some
examples are Social Worker jobs are Caseworker 4 years experience, inpatient Social Worker,
Social Worker Part time, and Caseworker. To conclude when I have major writing assignments
for a class this type of paper will help me because it talks about exigence, constraints, and
contexts. I understand these three terms now so if I have a major writing assignments they will
help me especially if the paper involves these three terms.

Revision Summary

Using my peers comments from the peer review we did online, I was able to make so
many changes to my draft 2. From my peers comments I was told to put an introduction to my
essay which I thought I had one in my essay but I guess I did not one have one. I also was told
to add a conclusion which I thought I also had but I did not. Furthermore my peers told me to use
in-text citations and choose a valid title for each part of the essay, now I know when I revise my
draft 2 I will add these things to make my essay more smooth and organized. To continue I was
also told to talk more about the article I chose which was When the pepper spray wont go
away, which I will do in my draft 2. My peers also told me to elaborate more about exigence in
my past writing, when I am revising my draft 2 I will talk about that. I was also told for part 2
and 3 I needed to write in Detached Impersonal Style, which I fixed in my draft 2 but for part 2 I
was lacking negotiation to the readers this is also something I added to my draft 2. Lastly for part
3 I talked a lot about Social Work my major but did not give examples about it, I was able to add
this to my draft 2 which made it more clear. I also did not include a reflection at the end of my
essay along with including elements from major writing, this is the one major thing that I will
add to my paper to make it even better.
