Hanas Reflection
Assignment 3 was very beneficial. Our professor assigned us a very interesting task. He asked
us to work in pairs and research on a huge predicament Egypts environment is facing and
then take pictures of such issues. My partner and I were hesitant on what topic to choose, at
first we thought about urbanization but we changed our minds and thought we should be
doing air pollution but then we discussed that we wanted to focus on a problem that not all
people are aware of. Thats when we finally chose land pollution. Land pollution is the
deterioration of the earths land surfaces often directly or indirectly as a result of mans
activities and their misuse of land resources. My partner and I went and took pictures of
several places such as Mohandeseen, Zamalek and Marioteya, since these places are covered
with lots of greenery. When we went there, we found out that alas these greenery
environments are not taken good care of at all. Most of the fields are cracked, plants are
dead and garbage is everywhere. I didnt realize how big of a problem it is until I saw it. And
sadly no one cares. No one does anything to fix it. It wasnt hard at all to take pictures of such
a situation since its nearly everywhere all around. We even saw a couple of kids throwing
garbage there and a man spitting. Overall it was a salutary experience that made me more
aware of whats happening around me.
Nadines Reflection
This assignment opened my eyes more on the problems we have in Egypt,
especially regarding pollution. My partner and I focused on land pollution,
which could be found on every block while walking around Egypt. Sadly, it
was not hard at all to find places to photograph this dilemma. We walked
around Mohandessin, Zamalek and El Mariouteya and captured how polluted
the land is. We found some places that were filled with trash, other places
the agricultural land was ruined, either lacks water and is very dry or has
extra water (water erosion). Land pollution is a huge problem that is not
given enough attention in Egypt, with the right resources, this problem can
disappear. Nonetheless, some organizations (ex.: Wadi Group) are working on
land cultivation and food processing as well as other stuff. The organization
develops agricultural techniques while abiding by high environmental and
social sustainability criteria. They work on land reclamation and supplying the
market with natural and healthy products. This is an example of an
organization that works to find a solution, hoever, one is not enough to solve
this problem in Egypt.
