A. Remarks
Remarks to LINGO Hyper 11.0: the objective function and constraints must be terminated with
a semicolon. All expressions between an exclamation mark and a semicolon are not part of the
model. Here, the objective function and the constraints are numbered as in the article. By
default, all variables are assumed as non-negative and continuous. However, binary variables
can be considered with the @bin function. The syntax is as follows:
@bin(variable_name);
Calculations can be started by entering the MSPSDS-IS model formulated in Section 3 into the
so-called child window labeled LINGO Model – LINGO1 and pushing the solve-button (for
further information see LINGO – the modeling language and optimizer, LINDO Systems Inc.,
Chicago 2008). All calculations were executed using the optimisation software package LINGO
Hyper 11.0 (LINDO 2008) on an Intel Xeon Two Quad Core W5580 PC with 6.4 GT/s and
24GB 1333MHz ECC RDIMM memory.
All solver status windows generated during the optimisations and the RF heuristics are
documented by screenshots. The solution reports of the optimisations as well as the final
solution reports of the RF heuristics are also documented. In contrast, the values of the binary
variables computed in the intermediate steps of the RF heuristics are not recorded. At any time,
they can be handed in later.

1 Bauxite mining
2 Aluminium oxide production
3 Primary aluminium production
t_i_k Production start time of the k-th production lot, k ∈ L i , at site i = 1,…,8 (in days)
q_i_j_k_m Quantity of intermediate products taken from the k-th production lot, k ∈ L i , at
site i = 1,2,3 [i = 4,…,7], which is fed into the m-th production lot, m ∈ L j , at site
a_i_k 1, if the k-th production lot, k ∈ L i , at site i = 1,…,8 is produced and 0 otherwise
B. Notation 3
[i = 4,…,7] are fed into the m-th production lot, m ∈ L j , at site j = 4,…,7
[j = 8] and 0 otherwise
Note: Data set 3 does not include manufacturing site 5, i.e. there is no production of aluminium
oxide at the Jamaica site. As a consequence, the corresponding continuous and binary decision
variables are omitted.
