Figure 6. Overlay of glacier outlines from MSI4/MSI11 (red), OLI8/OLI6 (yellow) and OLI4/OLI6
(green). Ice in shadow is well mapped, but debris-covered ice is missed. Image width is 4.1 km.
Figure 7. Relative area differences vs. glacier area for 155 selected glaciers and the three ratios shown
in Figure 8: OLI 15 m = OLI8/OLI6, OLI 30 m = OLI4/OLI6, and MSI 10 m = MSI4/MSI11.
Whereas the selected area was acquired under nearly clear-sky conditions, areas hidden by cloud
cover or cloud shadows have to be masked. Cumulus clouds can be detected and removed by just
applying the NDSI, the band ratios and the selected thresholds, but hardly detectable clouds, such as
thin clouds over snow covered areas, are more problematic. When they are not detected with the new
Cirrus band (available on both MSI and OLI) they have to be masked manually.

Figure 8. (a) True-color composite of the Sentinel-2A scene from 13 August 2015 showing a subset of the
Hohe Tauern range region (the peak of the Grovenediger is in the lower center) with glacier outlines
(red) and the classied snow-covered regions (blue). Image width is about 6 km; (b) Area-elevation
distribution of the snow and glacier cover for the region shown in (a).
