ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PHILOSOPHY

The American University of Paris invites applications for a full-time position in the
Philosophy Program housed in the Department of History at the rank of Assistant Professor
beginning August 1, 2018. The Department seeks to hire a philosopher with areas of expertise
in moral philosophy, in particular a scholar who tackles questions of global justice and
applied ethics. We are also interested in candidates with research and teaching interests in the
history of philosophy, the philosophy of religion, political philosophy or political economy.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in philosophy by time of appointment (August 1st 2018). Proven


capacity for research and engaged interactive teaching. The candidate must be able to speak
and write in fluent English. French fluency is not required, however ability in at least two
languages is a strong plus. European Union citizenship or legal right to work in France is not
necessary at the time of application.

The Institution: Founded in 1962, The American University of Paris (AUP) is a small,
undergraduate and Masters degree-granting institution with a Liberal Arts core, dedicated to
the advancement of the Arts & Sciences in an international and multicultural environment.
AUP brings together the values of the American higher education system with its location in
Paris and Europe. Located at the crossroads of American and European institutions of higher

The Department: The Department of History is home to the Philosophy Major, the History,
Law, and Society Major, and the Middle East Pluralities Program. The candidate will join an
inter-disciplinary group of faculty members with diverse specializations in history,
philosophy, politics, and law, who are actively engaged in research and teaching. The
Philosophy Program focuses its curriculum on the history of European philosophy from
ancient philosophy up to the present day with a focus on aesthetics and politics. Each major
writes a thesis that is the capstone of three semesters of mentored research. History
Department also houses the Center for Critical Democracy Studies, a vibrant research center
that engages with a range of questions related to the study of democracy. The American
University of Paris recently inaugurated two new programs in Philosophy, Politics, and
Economics (PPE), which is housed in the International Comparative Politics Department, and
the program in History, Law, and Society (HLS).

Responsibilities: The teaching load is six courses per academic year. The candidate will be
expected to teach core courses in the Philosophy major, the Philosophy, Politics and
Economics major, and the History, Law and Society major, and guide students on senior
theses. The candidate will also be expected to develop new courses in the various programs.

Other duties will include active research, advising students, and service to both the
department and the university.
Faculty at AUP must have a commitment to liberal arts education in a highly international
environment and pursue international research and scholarship. We seek engaged scholars,
and have high expectations of teaching and scholarly research.
