INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Air pollution or air pollution increasingly growing today, it's very alarming considering the
pollution is very harmful to the survival of living things and their environment. In large cities,
the contribution of motor vehicle exhaust gas as a source of air pollution reached 60-70%. While
the contribution of exhaust gases from industrial smokestacks are just range 10-15%, the rest
comes from other combustion sources, for example from the household, waste burning, forest
fires, etc. In fact many of the air pollutants that need to be controlled, but the World Health
Organization (WHO) set several types of pollutants that are considered serious.
Air pollutants that are harmful to human health, animals, as well as easy-to-damage to
property is a particulate containing particles of soot, hydrocarbons and aspa, sulfur dioxide, and
nitrogen oxides. All emssited by motor vehicles. Who estimates that 70% of the population of
cities in the world have ever sipped a dirty air due to motor vehicle emissions, 10% the rest
inhaling air that are marginal. As a result the fatal for infants and children. Adults who are at
high risk, such as pregnant women, the elderly, and people who have had a history of pulmonary
disease and respiratory tract chronical. That wretched, the sufferers or their families are not
aware that a variety of negative consequences derived from air pollution due to emissions of
motor vehicles that is increasingly of concern.
Some results of research on air pollution, with all the risks have been published, including a
risk of cancer of the blood. However, rarely realized knows how thousands of townspeople who
died each year because of respiratory tract infections, asthma, and lung cancer due to air
pollution in the city. Despite occasional rain has come down in the big cities in Indonesia is not
blue anymore. The city's air has been filled with soot and gases that are harmful to human health.
It is estimated in the next ten years an increase in the number of sufferers of lung disease and
respiratory tract. Not just acute respiratory infections that now occupies the first place in the
pattern of diseases in various parts of Indonesia, but also the increasing number of sufferers of
asthma and lung cancer.
Based on the description, the author is interested to have a research about community
awareness in lowering the level of air pollution in the city of Medan.

A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
2.1 Theory Framework
Pollution or contamination is the entry you submitted or living being, substances, energy
or other components into the environment or in the above-mentioned order of the environment

Air is a mixture of gases in the Earth's surface and air mixture components are not always
fixed or mutable. The air is indispensable because the air in the presence of oxygen, carbon
dioxide, ozone, and others. Oxygen is used to breathe by humans, carbon dioxide used by plants
for photosynthesis, and ozone serves to hold the ultra violet rays (Fardiaz, 1992).
Environmental change generally occurs due to air pollution, namely the entry of the
substance into the air contaminant that occurs naturally or is caused by human activity. The
influx of air contaminant substance occurs naturally as the onset of the eruption of Mount
merapi, which resulted in the number of smoke coming out of the mountain became the polluters
or the smoke posed due to forest fires while the influx of air contaminant substance caused by
human activities such as transportation, industrial activity, and garbage disposal. (Soedomo,
1999, 3). Air pollution can also be interpreted as a change of the composition or there is a change
of State is normally due to a materials or foreign substances in the air. The existence of these

beings (Vardhana, 2004).

6. Gantunglah the cardboard paper in the open air near the many vehicles that passed by.

DISCUSSION
From research conducted, it can be seen that on a crowded highway conditions very dirty paper,
this means that the air condition on a crowded highway is very dirty (positive polluting). While
on a deserted highway conditions paper there is only a little dust, this can be interpreted as the air
condition on a deserted Highway still clean so that it can be said no polluting. And based on the
results of experiments conducted air that are at many already heavily polluted by the presence of
pollution. This can be caused by the presence of smoke passing vehicles ply on the activities that
make the highway getting crowded, so it can result in the presence of air pollution, in addition to
the disposal of factory smoke and forest fires can also cause air pollution. The following air
pollution prevention efforts we can do, namely:
1. Reducing the use of fossil fuels mainly containing smoke and other pollutant gases in order
not to pollute the environment.
2. Do smoke filtering before smoke thrown into the air by way of installing sinks of
pollutants or sieve.
3. Build the chimney tall enough so that the smoke can penetrate the inversion layer thermal
so as not to add to the pollutants that caught on top of a settlement or us.
4. Reduce the efficient transport system by saving fuel and reducing private transportation.
5. Green plants Reproduce in areas of high air pollution, because one of the uses of plants is
as an indicator of pollution of early, as well as anchoring the dust and other particles.

5.1 Conclusions
1. Air pollution is caused by factors other than nature, more air pollution caused by humans, e.g.
from motor vehicles, industrial activity and so on. In addition to endangering the environment,
air pollution can also endanger human health
2. the low level of public awareness of the environment is also influential to the quality of the
environment itself, especially in the era of globalization it pembangunana everywhere. Including
the construction of factories that otherwise note can be harmful to the environment.
3. Air pollution can give a very harmful impact to human health and the environment of the lack
of attention from the Government also commands the influenced the development of growing
pollution increasing day.
5.2 Suggestions
1. According to our society have less awareness of the importance of safeguarding the
environment, for it needs to be on the adakannya socialization about the environment. As
students we also have a role, we can start from small things such as the use of environmentally
friendly goods, conduct such positive planting a thousand trees.
2. The Government is the party that has the most important role and the Government should
firmly crack down on the perpetrators of environmental destruction, especially the owners of the
factories that discharge harmful to human health, the law that has been made should be enforced
to keep no violation occurs.
3. Therefore, we as students start from now should have the awareness of the importance of
keeping our environment and juda keseimbanga can learn how to reduce and overcome the
pollution on the planet.
