Anchor Specifications:

Anchor cables specs = 2- strand as per ASTM A416

Bond Length (Lb) = 15 ft = 4.57 m
Un-bonded length (Lu) = 15 ft = 4.57 m
Jacking Force before losses (Fjack) = 40 kip = 177.6 kN
Force After initial losses (Fnet) = 30 kip = 133.2 kN
Hole diameter (D) = 100 mm
(Note: A total of 10 kips assumed to be lost in anchorage set)

1. Check of anchor system according to table 6 on page 71 (Ground Anchor):

Soil Properties:
Soil type = loose sand
Ultimate Estimated Transfer Load (T) = 70 kN/ m
Safety Factor (SF) = 2.0
Maximum allowable anchor transfer load (P) = LbT/ SF=4.57 70/ 2 = 160 kN > 133.2 kN, OK

2. Check of anchor system according to table 7 on page 73 (Ground Anchor):

Soil Properties:
Soil type = Fine Medium Sand
Average Ultimate Bond Stress (t) = Average (0.08, 0.38) = 0.23 MPa
Grout/Ground Interface capacity (P) = DLbt
= 10045700.23/ 1000 = 330 kN
Available Safety Factor = 330/ 133.2 = 2.47, OK

3. Check of anchor system according to figure 37 on page 76 (Ground Anchor):

Check #1: Minimum depth of anchor tail from free horizontal surface = 4.5 m
Comment: Provided depth is 5.48 m, OK.
Check #2: Minimum un-bonded length = 4.5 m (For strand)
Comment: Provided un-bonded length is 4.57 m, OK.
Check #3: Minimum un-bonded length after failure plane = Max of 1.5 m or (0.2H = 1.34)
Comment: Provided un-bonded length after failure plain is 1.22 m (Acceptable).
Check #4: Horizontal spacing > 1.2 m
Comment: Provided horizontal spacing is 1.5 m, OK.

4. Check of anchor system according to page 77 (Ground Anchor):

Tendon ultimate strength = 1860 MPa
Tendon area = 98.7 mm2
Tendon ultimate capacity (Fu) = 1860 98.7/1000 = 183.58 kN
0.75Fu = 0.75 183.58 = 137 kN
0.60Fu = 0.60 183.58 = 110 kN

Applied jacking on single tendon = 177.6/2 = 88.8 kN < 0.75Fu & 0.6Fu, OK.
