AOAC Official Method 915.01
Chloride in Plants
Volumetric Method I
First Action 1915
Final Action
(Since precision of this titration is considered to be 0.2 mg Cl,
accuracy of 1.0% requires test portions containing 20 mg.)
A. Reagents
(a) Silver nitrate standard solution.1 mL = 0.00355 g Cl.
Prepare solution slightly stronger than 0.1M, standardize as in
941.18E (see A.1.11), and adjust to exactly 0.1M.
( b ) A m m o n i u m o r p o t a s s i u m t h i o c y a n a t e s t a n d a rd
solution.0.1M. Prepare solution slightly stronger than 0.1M,
standardize as in 941.18D(b) (see A.1.11), and adjust to exactly
0.1M.
( c ) F e r r i c i n d i c a t o r. S a t u r a t e d s o l u t i o n o f
FeNH 4 (SO 4 ) 212H2O.
(d) Nitric acid.Free from lower oxides of N by diluting HNO3
with ca 14 volume H2O, and boiling until perfectly colorless.
B. Determination
To prepared solution, 928.04A (see 3.4.03), add known volume
standard AgNO3 solution in slight excess. Stir well, filter, and wash
AgCl precipitate thoroughly. To combined filtrate and washings add
5 mL ferric indicator and few mL HNO3, and titrate excess Ag with
thiocyanate standard solution to permanent light brown. From mL
AgNO3 used, calculate percent Cl.
